Concussion following car accident

On Thursday I was in a car accident and I thoroughly smashed my head in the car.
The ambulance team checked me over, called somewhere to check if I needed to go to hospital and also since I was pretty coherent at the time and I think my blood pressure was ok - they let me go home as long as someone stayed with me that whole day.
Since then every day my head has headaches on and off, I feel sick, slightly dizzy, get irritated with noise etc and so I called my GP yesterday who said it very likely is concussion.

Today is the same and honestly I'm just worried something else is going on or is concussion just like this? Should I really have some kind of scan or should I wait it out?

I'd Go to the hospital now.

+1 on go and get checked out.
(And I know it seems obvious, but get some one to drive you.)

Hospital now

I had a car accident and the impact knocked me out. I was given a head scan at hospital. I think perhaps you need one for reassurance.

I would go to a minor injuries, in the first instance, if you have one near you.
They will refer you to a more substantial facility if they think it's needed, and it will cut your waiting time down significantly. Concussion definitely can have effects for several days, and your symptoms sound within those realms.

I went to minor injuries the morning after a car accident to check for whiplash. I knew there wasn't much that could be done but a) it's better safe than sorry and b) if you were to claim for time off work etc, it's good to have it noted that you were seen at a medical facility

I would go and get checked out, likely that is normal for concussion but I would go to A and E at least for a second opinion. I wouldn't drive.

My best friend had a bike accident and terrible concussion. It tooks several weeks to get better. About 2 months I think.
But this was after she'd had full scans etc and given the all clear ie wasnt anything worse

LollipopLil · 03/03/2026 16:06

so I called my GP yesterday who said it very likely is concussion.

Did they say anything else, like what to do about it or what to watch out for?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 03/03/2026 16:08

They just said if it escalated to me being sick then to call them back but basically just rest at home. He said he'd absolutely sign me off after my first 5 self cert days. I was thinking surely I can't be off that long but actually, the way I feel I think it isn't a quick fix :(

I am a worrier though so it's playing on my mind.

That all sounds eminently sensible. I think if you closely monitor your condition that is the best route forward. But it can take weeks not days to recover, so don't rush anything and take any support you are offered, including if there is a need to sign off from work for a while to properly get back to normal.

Thank you

Follow the advice here. If you have red flag signs and symptoms then the NHS advice is to go to an Emergency Department
