Cleaning a cafetière

…might just be the most hateful kitchen task I can think of. Any others?

We don’t have one at home but are currently staying at a holiday lodge with one. I hate it. The grounds go everywhere, it’s a faff to disassemble if you want to clean it properly, the parts take up space on the draining board and there’s the added frisson of danger that you might smash it afterwards and all the faff would have been for nothing.

Slosh some water round in the cafetière and pour the liquid into the bin. So long as you have other stuff in, it shouldn’t leak.

The whole thing doesn’t need to deep of a clean, given it’s just got coffee grounds in

I just rinse it and the attachments in soapy water and then on draining board. Or dishwasher. The glass jug things are lethal though if broken.

Slosh it with water and pour the contents into the compost bin/flower bed.
Take the glass out and wash the components carefully.

I don't use it very often.

I just rinse and dump in dishwasher. Comes out clean

Dishwasher didn’t even occur to me. That is definitely easier. But re: “I just rinse”, do you tip the grainy water down the sink? Garden is a good idea @SirEddaVey

I use one every day. I make sure all the liquid is poured out, then scoop most of the grounds into the bin with a big spoon. Then rinse out the few grains left in it and stick it in the dishwasher.

Caspianberg · 03/03/2026 13:43

I spoon out main grains into small compost bin, and then the remaining gets rinsed down sink yes. Then dishwasher

I use one daily, too. Chuck coffee grounds in the compost bin, rinse the glass jug and put in the dishwasher. Then remove the layers of meshy/wire thing and rinse them off and let dry on the dish rack.
