Contacting the tax office

Does anyone know how I can do this? I've got a government gateway account but as far as I can see there's no way to ask a question or have a conversation.

I received a notification of tax on Friday and apparently I have unpaid tax so they've fiddled with my tax code
I want an explanation and also to pay any unpaid amounts before the new tax year as a lump sum and have a normal tax code going into the new tax year.

Ring them. You will be on hold for ages ( typically 40 mins plus) but when you finally get through I have always found them super helpful and it gets sorted there and then. The number should be on your tax letter.
