Anyone else on tenterhooks waiting for a secondary school place?

... just that really!

We applied out of catchment as our catchment school is okay but not great.

I think the email is automated and lands overnight.

Anyone else waiting?

Yep, but our first choice is catchment and feeder school so something will be terribly wrong if we don't get it.

Good luck!

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 01/03/2026 18:06

Yes, we should be okay and it's very unlikely not to be out first choice but I am still convinced that I managed to mess it up somehow and that it will all go wrong so could really just do with the email popping up asap please!!!

Hermie12 · 01/03/2026 18:07

yes ! Our first choice is grammar and out of catchment. So down to a geography lottery.

Fingers crossed for everyone. The ordeal that we went through back in March 2004 still pisses me off ! Daughter passed 11plus and didn’t get into our catchment Grammar School by 20 metres 😭The appeal process and eventually involving the ombudsman to prove that people had been dishonest with home addresses lied was not what we anticipated…stressful is an understatement! We won the case thank goodness!

Volpini · 01/03/2026 18:23

yes. I’m so over this now.
we live in a crap town with crap secondary schools. I’m an idiot for moving here and we can’t afford to
move.
My son has had a horrible time at primary school- if you aren’t into football they don’t understand what’s wrong with you so aside from the fact it’s not a great school, Id rather he had a reset.
We are miles from grammar schools. He do take and pass the 11+ but his score is a bit off what he would need to get in the only one anywhere near us 10 miles away (the only one still with no catchment and you can imagine it’s really competitive - and even more so this year.). Weve still put that as his number 1 school but he need a miracle to achieve that which is really sad. We’ve put another secondary that we’re out of catchment for as our second choice - again really unlikely. And the closest school to us (which isn’t great) with all the kids I don’t really want him spending another 5 years with as 3rd option. We also got an offer to a private school in the next town but if we accept it will really stretch us. It’s a suboptimal situation!
Sending love to you all.

Waiting here too and we generally don't get our email until 5pm.

It's second time around for me but DC1 goes to single sex school and DC2 is the other sex so we've had to go through it all again.

We'll get our 4th choice and it is a good school which we both loved but we applied to a few ahead of this as they are amazing schools (they are out of borough as well as out of catchment so 0.00001% chance but we couldn't not apply!)

I'm pretty relaxed this time around. DC1 got 2nd choice and I was discreetly and subtly heartbroken. They're now in Y8 and flying.

This time round I'm much more philosophical - I know "it all works out as its meant to work out" so no real stress here. I'm still nervously excited though. Just want it all confirmed so DC2 knows what is what .

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 01/03/2026 19:16

It is such a stress!

It is our first go round. I have been telling DD1 all the time, don't worry, all the schools on the list are really good etc.

But she is a chronic overthinker and still stressing!

I have found her a short meditation video to do as she was getting all het up at dinner.

Our LA have sent out the offers tonight. They do it every year. Place accepted already.

Vivienne1000 · 01/03/2026 19:21

Good luck everyone. Meanwhile those of us working in schools will be waiting to see what our cohort looks like this year.

I think my borough is particularly late so I wouldn't worry too much.

I've never heard of it arriving earlier than 5pm here (I have numerous nieces and nephews as well as DC1 and we've never found out before evening time!!).

With DC1 I ended up logging on to the government site as the email hadn't arrived by 6pm. The offer was there so we at least knew. The email eventually arrived about 7pm.

Oh my goodness. No way!! Glad to hear you were happy to accept.

We're still best part of 24h away from hearing.

I wonder why it differs so much between LA's?

Edited

No idea why our LA do it early, maybe so their ready to deal with all the queries and appeals from minute 1 on Monday morning? I don’t understand why other LA’s would be late in the day on Monday, they must know and have the auto emails ready to ping.

It’s nice to have the confirmation but I wasn’t particularly anxious this year as we had sibling priority. I was much more nervous 3 years ago.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 02/03/2026 09:13

Email arrived 1.01am with good news!

But yeah @Crunchymum it's different everywhere! We are in Hants but moved from Devon and the mums in my old class WA group were still waiting at 8am, debating whether it was wrong to shout thru school gates at breaktime 😁
