Card swipe didn't work

I bought a couple of bits in a shop this morning, paid at the self checkout and went home. I've just checked my bank account and the payment didn't go through as I had reached my swipe limit!
I didn't see the message on the checkout screen.
I'm going back to the shop tomorrow to let them know and to obviously pay.
I won't be in trouble will I ?

What’s a swipe limit?? I’m sure it will be ok. You’re being honest, going back and paying. Any cctv will show you at the tills attempting to pay so will back up your story. How will you prove what you bought though??

You get a certain amount of 'taps' on a card and then have to insert your card and use the PIN number . I didn't get a receipt and have taken the labels off the items, so don't know how I will prove what I bought. it came to £19 so not a fortune.

If you had a receipt then it must have gone through??

The Machine wouldn’t have given a receipt if the payment hadn’t been taken??

Strange. Check with bank again and then if need be go back to shop to pay.

But the machine would have asked if you wanted a receipt or not, you obviously just tapped and left, just go back and say it will be fine,

im not understanding though Op, so you just tapped and left? I always check it’s gone through. Or download something like Apple/Google pay, then you won’t have a tap limit.

People where I work do this all the time they tap their card hear the peep and assume it's gone through and leave. You won't be in trouble hardly anyone comes back to pay because they don't realise.

I didn't read on i see there was no receipt, i think people sometimes expect the tap to just work and thats probably what has happened here , the op can take the labels with the barcode if they are worried about the £19,
