just logged into my united utilities water account to see my account is almost £400 in credit, do they refund this or just knock it off future bills?

google tells me they do give refunds and they don't give refunds depending on which website I go on so wanted to ask if anyone has any experience of this? their phone line is closed until Monday so I can't ask them yet.

thanks.

Octopus refund if you have enough credit so sure they will too. You can normally arrange on the app.

You can request it is refunded.

Legally they have to refund you if you ask - they will try to ask you to leave it with them to go against future bills. I always leave some so maybe only request £200-300 back?

thank you for the replies, I will call them on Monday.

Do you have a water meter? If so, it might be worth checking when it was last read, because if it hasn't been done for some time, they may have underestimated your usage.

Call and check, as they may have just not applied the money to your bill yet. For example my gas and electric we pay monthly, the money sits there as a credit then we get a quarterly bill, and they 'take' the money so if I log on at the wrong time it looks like I'm loads in credit when I'm not really

As others have said, they are legally required to refund you if requested, though they’ll probably press you to keep the funds with them. They may require an updated reading before refunding depending on when a physical reading was last taken (which they are allowed to do).
