Pop songs that have been used for something else

And that you can no longer just listen to without thinking of something else!
They may have a slight lyric change as in my first example below.

I’m probably not explaining too well so I’ll give you examples…

Rush Hour by Jane Weidlin instantly takes me to Capital Radio in the 1980s and Chris Tarrant’s breakfast show jingle

Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles and I’m taken to Sunday teatime as a child watching Holiday

There are more but that’s a start!
Anyone else?!

Not a pop song but bloody British airways have ruined the flower duet for me…

”it’s my life” tampax - my step mum was always saying she liked this to which we’d reply “oh tampax advert”

Can't remember what the band were called but the song was called "put your hands on".
It will always be "its your letters" to me off Chris Evans TFI Friday or whatever it was called.

Edited

Reef - put your hands on

that always reminds me of Egg cooking in This Life

Reef.

"Grândola, Vila Morena" by Zeca Afonso (Portugal, 1974) was broadcast on the radio to signal the start of the Carnation Revolution, which peacefully overthrew the Estado Novo regime. A friend of mine's mum drove her kids from Portugal to Spain whilst this was going on.

I can't recall any right now @HighburyLass but there are lots of songs that pop into my head when I am doing certain things, or driving past a certain places, or even crocheting a blanket. The same song will pop into my head for each thing, without me really remembering it, but then I'll think oh that's what I heard during x time

watchuswreckthemic · 28/02/2026 23:18

Night nurse by Gregory Isaac’s- now synonymous with the drug!

NormasArse · 28/02/2026 23:21

I’m so annoyed that Sainsbury’s have used the music to Start, by the Jam. Ruined the song for me!

Bananalanacake · 28/02/2026 23:38

Thanks for pointing out that Put your hands on is by Reef. It reminds me of going to a night club every Saturday and they would always play that so it brings back memories of happy times, just didn't know who it was by.

This one is quite specific, as you need to have listened to a north east local radio channel in the 90's or 00's but for me, the best by Tina Turner will always be

"Your simply the best, South Cleveland Garages"

ReacherSaidNothing · 01/03/2026 01:04

Toploader"s Dancing in the Moonlight was used in a Sainsburys ad about 25 years ago, i worked for them at the time and whenever the song was played in store it was the cue for staff to run and start stocking up shelves from random cages dotted about the aisles

Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight - Dairy Milk
Free - All Right Now - Wrigley's
Marvin Gaye - Heard It Through The Grapevine - Levi 501s (the Nick Kamen laundrette advert!)
Easy Like Sunday Morning - Commodores - Halifax
Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme - Natwest (they used it in a series of adverts)
Berlin - Take my Breath Away - Peugeot 405 (where it drives through fire - The Lion Goes From Strength to Strength!)

Now I'm going slightly mad thought as I am trying to remember what the advert was where a woman has a job interview and it's very grey and raining and she breaks her shoe, I think her umbrella blows inside out. But because she has a cash card (new invention at the time!) she can replace both and then she gets home and tells her dad that she's got the job. I thought it was one of the Natwest ones with the same theme tune, but I can't find hide nor hair of it online... grr!

That Jess Glynn one used by jet2 is absolutely rammed down your throat . It used to be an ok song but now I feel like it’s been ruined,

D-Ream Things can only get better
Blair the snake oil salesman ruined that song forever.

Yes , I used to love this song but it has been irrevocably sullied by war criminal Blair

Now that’s a blast from the past!!!

Bloody postcode lottery and Someone’s Knocking at the Door. And Jump in the Line for the other lottery. Both heard at least 10 times a day - find some other songs, there are 1000s!
