A few months back according to the media it was Reform's for the taking - now it's a three-way bet between Labour, Greens and Reform

The decline women's rights will certainly accelerate - you're absolutely right there.

and the alternative are who - Reform? They will decimate women’s rights.

So despite sending 1,000 activists to one constituency Labour could only get third place in one of 50 strongest seats. They are heading for wipe out. It wasn't even close in the end.

I don't think that follows. People tend to register protest votes in bye elections but it doesn't reflect what they would do in a General Election. This was pretty clearly a protest vote by Labour voters but it's interesting that the votes didn't go to Reform. I strongly suspect the Green voters would return to the Labour fold in a General Election.

You have not been paying attention. Elections like this are always seen as being about sending a message... as they are not changing the government as a result and people know this.

I think local elections are viewed this way. This is a by election. It’s different. Or it should be.

Not if they feel as they did yesterday but also wait for the local elections.

Labour are unaware of why they came third losing 13,000 votes.

Are you confusing a by election with a local election?

A by election is the same, in principle, to a general election. You’re choosing a member of parliament.

I have researched. My whole family have been lifelong Labour supporters. We’ve all joined the Green Party. My teens arent old enough to vote. They talk about politics now ! All because of the green SM campaigns. To me that’s amazing.

You're happy with rapists in women's prisons? Women being forced to share changing rooms with me as part of their employment contract? Women only spaces including men? Women being forced to share wards with men where they are raped? Etc etc etc etc etc.

Not sure what you’re thinking of to post that but yes I’m aware of the difference thanks.

Labour might try to wash this result as they were this morning, they’ll struggle to do the same after the local elections.

If it’s a wipe out they will feel it.

ETA just saw your edit

All things that happened under the previous Tory government and continue to happen under the current Labour government. Hardly a stick that can only be used to beat supporters of the Greens.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 27/02/2026 07:26

Just so so happy that Matt Goodwin lost and we don’t have to see his stupid smug face all over everywhere this morning. As always, I must remind everyone: this is a man who ate his book on TV. What an utter fucking tosspot.

Fuck you Farage, also.

Well let’s hope the English Greens are far more competent than the Scottish Greens. As @SirChenjins said, take a look at their track record when they were in a power sharing agreement with SNP, it was not good.

I was about to make this point. Scotland is a good example of how damaging 'progress', from left of centre (as the SNP once was) to the politics of the more extreme left, can be.

I despair of politics in the UK; there is no common sense in debate. The thing which concerns me most is the inability to have respectful debate about the thorny issues, it descends into pointless politicking, there are way too many careerist MP's and MSP's.

I'm essentially politically homeless these days (having been an SNP voter most of my life, until the odious Sturgeon bulldozed the party). What I do know is I couldn't ever vote Green (which means that my only option, if it does indeed become a two horse race on a national scale, would be to vote Reform).

I think you are missing the point that in a By election, unless the governments majority is one MP for example, nothing changes - so people vote to send a message, knowing that it makes no real difference to the current government apart from sending a message!

TeenagersAngst · 27/02/2026 07:12

Well, I really hope that isn’t replicated across the country in a general election. The Greens would completely wreck the country, their policies are not workable and they have no understanding of the economy.

Whilst i sort of agree, one could argue that neither main party have much of a clue, especially the Tories, who four times have caused self inflicted recessions... ERM crisis, Austerity, Brexit and Liz Truss.

The Greens will change how policy is decided in the UK for the moment, Labour need to return to their traditional routes and values, rather than chasing Reform.

The Tories, though, they have tied themselves to going further and further to the 'right.

womendeserveequalhumanrights · 27/02/2026 07:29

Hannah seems like a good candidate - she did say at hustings she'd represent local people and wouldn't blindly follow the GP line, which I'm sure won her some votes. I wonder if that's true. I hope so because a lot of GP policies are insane.

HelloPossible · 27/02/2026 07:31

So if the Greens win a general election does that mean we are getting things like a universal income? Have to say packing in work sounds good, don’t fancy working till 67 if they can tax the rich.

HostaCentral · 27/02/2026 07:33

I’m hugely concerned about the climate crisis and passionate about the countryside and rewilding as much of the UK as possible

But the greens want a massive social housing build, wind turbines and solar farms. On farms and the green belt. Make it make sense!

womendeserveequalhumanrights · 27/02/2026 07:34

Unfortunately I think ZP's economic ideas, whilst they might sound good at a cursory first glance, are likely to have a Truss-ian impact on the markets.

Governments need to look at this idea with the rise of AI we are losing many jobs. Scoff as much as you like, AI is a serious problem that needs addressing and UBI might be part of the solution.

Cornwallpov · 27/02/2026 07:36

so glad Greens won. I live in Cornwall and the population here seem to love Reform. My husband and I usually vote Labour but we both decided on Wednesday to vote Green.

We're politically homeless.

The children at my DC secondary school are also quickly becoming Green supporters and they're all 12-16.

I am uncomfortable with a couple of their ideas and policies. But I'm also uncomfortable with the entirety of Reform and the current UK government.

Well they would, they’re students and teenagers.

Useful reminders on this thread that, for some, trans people are the only thing that fucking matters.

They would rather have actual fascists running them. Give me strength.

For the record, I don't think people can change sex, and I don't think men should be in women's prisons. But I'm not willing to accept racism, misogyny and homophobia, and our country being remotely controlled by Russia as the price of changing that.

Overall a good result - I have no time for Polanski and Labour deserved the kicking but most importantly kept out Reform

I'm too old for it but it will probably only be the same amount as the state pension not £35k a year or whatever median wage is.
