Why were the hockey team given McDonalds at the White House?

Leaving aside all the other talk about the visit, why were they given McDonald's?

Presumably that's a deliberate choice for some sort of PR reason, but what?

If you were "honoured" with a lunch at Downing Street, wouldn't you at least expect a proer meal?

Why not?. Double cheeseburger is the best thing on the menu. Trump's favorite snack plus what' more American than McDonald's. Why do you care?

smallglassbottle · 26/02/2026 13:45

Makes a change from pizza I suppose 🙈

Changingplace · 26/02/2026 13:48

It’s what Trump always seems to get for guests, I agree it’s a bit grim and would undoubtedly be cold to boot.

It’s not much of a treat is it? I’ve seen the female Olympians have all been invited for a fabulous Vegas trip off the back of the backlash of Trump’s comments & the make team’s reaction, hope they have a wonderful time.

I wouldn’t say I "care" but I'm interested in how and why these kinds of decisions are made. How the public image of politicians is managed.

It's been done before and it's probably a good look for man of the people Trump.

Trump always wants to boost the ‘all American’ view and I guess McDonald’s is that, shame really that’s seen as the height of a country’s food offering.

Edit: I agree the positioning is interesting, I work in PR so I also tend to look for the intent and motives of these kind of orchestrated decisions, it’s all planned out along with the press/social media strategy to deliver a certain angle.

The fact some people are replying questioning why it matters just shows it works, it’s all about creating a narrative and public image.

Throwback to the 1980 win probably and invite to WH by then president Jimmy Carter. At the time McDs did a massive sponsorship and giveaway based on USA wins. Why does it matter?

Vodkamartini3olives · 26/02/2026 13:57

Have you questioned why The Canadian team are pictured with food from and sponsored by Tim Hortons?

Wanted to add to my post above, it also positions Trump as a ‘man of the people’ he’s feeding them what an average American might eat, it’s designed to make him seem accessible, on a par with the average voter, someone they can align themselves with.

It’s a known thing that Trump genuinely thinks that laying on the Big Macs is a good meal. He’s been doing this for a long time.

‘Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, wrote in his 2022 memoir Breaking History that when his father-in-law contracted COVID-19 in 2020, ordering in from the fast food chain signaled that he was on the way to recovery. “I knew he was feeling better when he requested one of his favorite meals: a McDonald’s Big Mac, Filet-o-Fish, fries and a vanilla shake,” Kushner wrote. Former Trump campaign officials Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie said in their 2017 book Let Trump be Trump that the former President’s go-to McDonald’s order consisted of “two Big Macs, two Fillet-O-Fish and a chocolate malted [shake].”’ https://time.com/7095424/donald-trump-mcdonalds-love-campaign-kamala-harris-work-history/

I think it demonstrates Trump’s complete and utter lack of class, @Topplace.

When a Head of State is honouring people with a meal, it should be special and high class - two terms that have never, and will never be used to describe the Toddler in Chief.

BillieWiper · 26/02/2026 14:01

Because Trump loves McDonald's. I'd be appalled as it'd be stone cold. Just what you'd want. It seems so tacky doesn't it?

I didn't know they were. Who by? Aren't they sponsored by Tim Horton's?

But yes, if Mark Carney had served them Tim Horton's at lunch at his residence, I'd be wondering who made that decision and why. I find it fascinating, the way these things are managed.

I expect that oafish man thinks serving your guests a McDonalds at a formal occasion is the very pinnacle of haute cuisine dining.

Nothing wrong with McDonalds per se - I like the occasional burger as much as the next person - but really. How uncouth can you get?

Vodkamartini3olives · 26/02/2026 14:18

Sidney Crosby, Brad Marchand, Nathan MacKinnon to name a few have been widely pictured Drinking Timmy's. Several members of the team have posted if thier love of Timmy's.
Any excuse to have a pop at the States eh!

TucanPlay · 26/02/2026 14:22

Because Trump is a Fuckwit and McDonald’s is one of the alters of Capitalism Cuntedness at which we all must worship.

Of course they drink it, they're sponsored by the company. I'm not saying hockey players shouldn't eat and drink McDonalds, I'm saying it's an interesting choice when honouring the team at the White House, when I'd have expected something more formal.

It's not a critisism anyway. It could be a genius PR move, that's what I'm interested in.

We all know it's to create a narrative and image - the question is what image does it create? That elite sportsmen celebrate and aspire to junk food?

Pallisers · 26/02/2026 14:29

There is a difference between drinking/eating the food of the company that sponsors you and being served it in the White House.

Trump always serves mcdonalds. I'm partial to a big mac myself but the idea of eating it hours after made is grim. Unless they've set up a mcdonalds franchise in the basement of the white house - wouldn't surprise me.

GreatUserName · 26/02/2026 14:33

I think they're collecting the Friends figurines and ordering en masse is the best way to get hold of the elusive Ross

PermanentTemporary · 26/02/2026 14:35

Presumably they give a lot of money to his ‘campaign’ (back pocket) plus they think it looks good to his voters, plus it has the word Donald in it and sounds more masculine (and more Scottish) than Wendy’s. Ockham’s razor.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 26/02/2026 14:36

Trump has no taste. Just look at his god-awful preferences for interior design.

Nah he will probably have hired some McDs staff in to make it fresh on the premises

No because it’s Trump’s choice as they’re his guest.
