Areas to live near Salford?

I moved to England from Ireland and lived in Salford for a few years now, in a rented apartment. I'm looking to buy a house. Where is a good area for 30 year old females to get on the housing ladder? I work in Salford so want to stay close. I currently live on Salford quays so have lots of things in walking distance so don't want to downgrade in amenities too much... But appreciate I will have to compromise somewhere to get on the housing ladder.

Hard to say without knowing your budget but Chorlton is lovely and not far away but not cheap.
DS1 rented in areas of Hulme and Moss Side, neither of which sounded inspiring at first but the streets he was in were young without being "studenty", reasonably priced and he didn't have any grief while living there.

Budget around £200k

You could buy a nice apartment in Salford quays for 200k. Or do you really want a house?

Monton is a nice area to live in.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 24/02/2026 21:11

If you want a house, Swinton? Not super smart but I always felt safe living thwre when I did (a long time ago but was a solo female!), near Monton, good links with the fast busses and the train. The area south of the east Lancs is nicer but much more expensive

Do your research on the types of properties that mortgage lenders are willing to lend towards - generally no high rises, those with cladding, those with high service charges and ground rents.

This rules out a lot of flats in Salford Quays - unless you’re a cash buyer or buying to let out flats.

Staley Bridge?

Chorlton is great but pretty expensive.

Monton, Swinton, Whitefield, Radcliffe, Heaton Park. You’ll find some nice 2 bed terraces for your money in those areas.

MumAsYouAre · 25/02/2026 07:07

Prestwich or Monton are not far away. Both have nice “village” centres with independent and chain shops/bars etc. Plenty of green spaces also.

I wouldn't buy a flat, regardless of budget and location, because the vast majority are leasehold.

Look for a two bed freehold house in Swinton.

I have a mortgage on a high rise flat in Salford quays. No issues, all the cladding stuff long sorted ✔️

Why do you say that about a flat on Salford quays? Interested to know as it's an option

Bury is actually nice, great trams to manchester all the time, great town centre and good sized propeties for your budget. Very close to Prestwich and Whitefield too
