None of this can be true....but....

I have a new aquaintance. Practically the first time I had an actual conversation with him, he told me how he grew up in another country, but his family had to make a moonlight flit because of their involvement with the mob, when he was 14yo. His uncle eventually went to prison for attempting to murder his father.

This meant his sister had to give up a promising sporting career where she was already competing internationally.

His accent is "correct" for where he lives now because he was deaf until he was in his early 20s, when he had an implant fitted.

He cousin plays for a Premiership FC.

His Grandad is a very famous decorated war hero etc etc

Loads of really far fetched stories, that if they were true, he surely wouldn't have told someone he's only just met.

But it all checks out with stories in mainstream newspapers when you Google.

So is he pretending to be someone else? I just don't know why he'd be telling me!

Where and how did you meet him?

WallyHilloughby · 24/02/2026 18:32

Is his name Derek Duvall?

Lougle · 24/02/2026 18:36

Well his hearing would be obvious - implants are on the inside but the processor sits on the outside. So does he have small discs that clip onto his skull?

None of this can be true....but....
Lougle · 24/02/2026 18:37

Was his sister older or younger? There aren't many sports which would allow international competing before the age of 14.

MadKeepsake · 24/02/2026 18:43

How do you mean, it all checks out in newspapers? Which bits?

Highstool · 24/02/2026 18:46

Where and how did you meet him?

Through a sports club. He turned up out of the blue and after a couple of moths training had become one of the strongest members!

Older. A woman by the name he uses for his sister, definitely had some early success in the right time frame for her age, and then disappeared. Her results are all online.

All if it. The murder charge and the mob history, the famous Grandad, the sister, the footballer, all there in easily Googled news articles.

Even if it's true - did he ask you anything about you? Did he chat generally about things you might both be interested in? Or was it all 'me me me - I'm great, me'.

Because if that's the case, even if it's all true, he sounds like an insufferable bore.

Brewtiful · 24/02/2026 18:53

If you've googled and it all checks out why would you think it was untrue?

He's actually (obviously) very charming and very interested in everyone.

I forgot, he was also giving it large about top season tickets he has at a Premisership Club. The sort that cost £££ and are hard to get hold of. Just as youre thinking pull the other one, he's taken 3 different members from the club with him (on different occasions) because his mate couldn't make it.

Some people love to brag. And by the sounds of it he’s got a lot to brag about. If it all checks out it must be true. He might also be nervous and rambling on.

Uricon2 · 24/02/2026 18:58

There is an old East Anglian expression "blow hard" for people who are always boasting. It doesn't really matter if it's true or not, those who do this are boring (and insecure, but mainly boring)

Yes, but how do you know these people are all his relatives?

Is there anything to indicate that those people are connected to each other?

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 24/02/2026 19:09

What do you mean that it all checks out?

There are Premier League footballers who have cousins but that doesn't mean that this man has a Premier League footballing cousin.

Did all his fancy stories check out in that they led back to the same person?

IDespairOfTheHumanRace · 24/02/2026 19:09

A braggart and a Walter Mitty character by the sounds of it - softening you up for some ulterior reason I should not be surprised. Tread carefully...

Parsleyforme · 24/02/2026 19:16

Is he also an undercover MI5 agent?

Yes, all the names, dates and family relationships are correct.

Absolutely, it does seem like that, except that all his stories check out.

Yes, e.g. photos of him with the sporty sister. News reports mentioning hero Grandad when Uncle went to prison. News report including the names of all the children of the victim.

Why shouldn’t it be true? I have a bizarre family history but very rarely talk about it. I don’t want to be judged or defined by my ancestors, for want of a better word. It sounds as if he’s out to impress/shock from the outset.

Fearlesssloth · 24/02/2026 19:27

@Highstool if he was born deaf or became deaf as a young child he wouldn’t be able to speak properly! He’d have had no exposure to language. A person who’s had lifelong deafness does not just start talking and forming words by copying those around them and sounding just like everyone else after getting an implant. His speech would be severely impaired

HobnobsChoice · 24/02/2026 19:28

Seems unwise to have lots of info about your family online and then talk about them a lot if an organised crime group is after you. By Mob does he/you mean Mafia or an OCG in another country.
Presumably as he was an adult when he got his cochlear implant he has some level of "deaf accent" as well as a local accent as he would have had impaired or no hearing before that.
