Tourette’s/BAFTAs offensive language

I wasn’t watching, I’ve just read the article on BBC news. I will admit I know little of Tourette’s and therefore posting to understand.

The tics agree involuntary, and often use offensive language. But what I’m struggling to get my head around is excusing use of the N word because it was caused by the disability when it was (seemingly) only directed at black people?

Also presumably it’s learned vocab so children don’t have swear words as tics? How does this develop?

I don't really understand what you are asking. Are you trying to say that tourettes syndrome is racist?

nondrinker1985 · 23/02/2026 16:39
  • Coprolalia often includes short, sharp, socially taboo words.
  • These may include profanity, sexual words, religious insults, or racial slurs.
  • The specific word depends entirely on what exists in the person’s language exposure.

There is no evidence that Tourette’s “creates” racist thoughts. It affects inhibition, not belief systems.

watch the film, is
my advice.

No I think what she is saying is that if with Tourette’s the shouting etc is involuntary why did he only shout the N word when black people were on the stage not randomly when a white person was on the stage . It is a good question which I hope someone with first hand experience of Tourette’s will explain . Either way it should have been edited out .

CitizenZ · 23/02/2026 16:44

This is exactly why I'm so glad the film 'I Swear' was made. To help educate those who have such little understanding of Tourette's. I suggest you watch it, or one of the many documentaries available about it.

I don't understand why exactly, but someone said that tourettes causes people to say the worst possible thing in a situation. Which would not be the n word to white people. And does not suggest they are racist, in fact possibly the opposite (rather than this being the first thing they thought, they know it's deeply inappropriate and would not use it voluntarily).

Like intrusive thoughts, it's not a reflect of you, your true thoughts or personality. It's a neurological disorder. The idea of people hearing my intrusive thoughts make me feel sick. I feel awful for everyone involved.

Yes
Also, they edited it out when someone shouted out ‘Free Palestine’ but not when the N word was used by someone with Tourettes
One of the presenters is an American actor
Michael B Jordan .
Imagine how awful he felt having come to the UK to present an award and having to face this

noblegiraffe · 23/02/2026 16:50

Because the Tourette's makes you say the worst possible thing for that given moment.

I believe he said 'Fuck the Queen' when meeting the Queen.

Lampzade · 23/02/2026 16:50

Has he apologised for his actions ?

My daughter has Tourette’s with coprolalia - which is the symptom that swears/socially unacceptable language/etc.

Her brain will say “so, what’s the worst thing o can say right now?”

It won’t always be racial slurs, she’s ticced homophobic slurs as well, it can also be stuff like “I’ve got a bomb in my bag” in an airport - or “my mum has drugs up her ass” while waiting in the security queue - thankfully Luton airport security understands what Tourette’s is.

I’d recommend watching the film I Swear, it’s the most accurate portrayal of someone living with Tourette’s I’ve seen

My daughter isn’t racist, it’s not what she’s really thinking, it is the worst possible thing she can say or do at that particular moment in time and she has absolutely no way of stopping it.

AfternoonTeaAddict · 23/02/2026 16:52

Yes- after watching the film I googled if he actually said 'fuck the queen' when meeting her and apparently he did.

I feel so bad for him. The biggest night of his life- he was probably so nervous- and then this. My DS has tourettes and I know he can't control it. We loved the film because we recognised so much in it.

Do you think everyone with a disability should be “edited out”?

iwouldshagtomhardy · 23/02/2026 16:54

People complaining about this are pathetic. Have they not seen the film? Do they not understand the condition? Grown men - pathetic!

BringonSpringnowplease · 23/02/2026 16:55

What was the Queen's reaction?

PuppyMonkey · 23/02/2026 16:55

“Fuck the queen” would have been edited out if it had been filmed, I bet.

Would you expect someone in a wheelchair apologise for taking up space on a bus?

RedToothBrush · 23/02/2026 16:57

Have you ever met someone with severe Tourette's?

It's not that they are bad, it's just that their brain knows what is the most offensive thing and it says it. The person can't help it. It's involuntary. They aren't being offensive. It's their brain misfiring. It's not even intrusive thoughts you can't say out loud. It's just the most offensive things possible.

My friend has it. Shes American and starts shouting swears, saying anti-christian stuff and ticking. It's truly awful to watch because she doesn't want to. People stare and judge and tut.

You are doing that OP. Judging and tutting.

It only serves to make it worse because it increases stress levels which makes it happen more regularly.

AfternoonTeaAddict · 23/02/2026 16:57

BringonSpringnowplease · 23/02/2026 16:55

What was the Queen's reaction?

Apparently one of her staff told him afterwards she understood his condition and not to worry.

BillieWiper · 23/02/2026 16:58

Was on another thread about this and initially thought someone should be able to train themselves not to yell out certain things. But it's neurological so they really can't control it. I was rightly corrected by those more knowledgeable.

I do think they should've beeped out the N word though. They could easily have done that. As POC could still be offended just by hearing that they allowed it to be broadcast. Before they got to learn about TS.

I’m sure he was told that the person has Tourette’s, so he would know that the didn’t mean it at all.

What was the Queen's reaction?

Apparently one of the Archers (her security at Holyrood) told him not to worry, she knew all about his condition, and they all just got on with it without commenting on it further

I think that racial slurs that are irrelevant to what’s being filmed should be edited out. Black people aren’t a teaching moment.

It's still hard to hear though. Even if you know the intention isn't to hurt.
