If you don’t have a toilet brush…

…what would you want guests to do with ‘below the line’ skid marks?

Had overnight stay this weekend with some friends and I felt terrible leaving a mess but there was nothing available. No cleaning products or toilet brush in bathroom.

I never understand the germy toilet brush fear. As long as you are using bleach as part of the toilet clean it's game over for germs whether they are in the toilet or they are on the toilet brush. Bleach is a ruthless germ killer. Odds of survival for tiny microscopic germs clinging to the toilet brush for dear life being dunked in bleach as part of the clean is practically zero.

People have got some incredibly strange hangups about certain things, especially on Mumsnet it seems!

I basically do the same as you - pop some bleach in the loo, give it a good scrub with the brush and rinse/wash the bristles in the bleachy water when you flush the loo. It might utterly shock some anti-loo brush people on here but I've used the same brush for 5+ years and it's still in good condition and never once have I had issues with it smelling or anything. If it drips on the floor then you just give the floor a quick wipe with a bit of cleaner spray.

There is absolutely no way on earth that I would be sticking my un-gloved hands in a toilet, regardless of where I am, to clean a few poo marks off the bowl or under the water...no way, no how! 🤢

FiveShelties · 23/02/2026 03:43

Interesting thread OP. I notice you have not returned, too busy perhaps?🙄

Cheddars · 22/02/2026 23:53

So toilet brush users- how are you then getting the poo off your brush? Quick rinse under the tap? 🤢 Or are you just popping it back in its holder?

There's no poo on my brush because I'm not using it to literally break up poo? And even if there was trace amounts of poo on it and it went back in the holder that's specifically for a toilet brush, who cares? Im not using it to clean my dishes, its sole function is cleaning the toilet. This whole problem with them is weird tbh

Ziggedy · 23/02/2026 05:09

@Cheddars so non-toilet brush users, if there is a brush available, do you still reject it in favour of the wrapped hand approach?

What happens in a public toilet (if you should do the unthinkable and poo whilst out) with a heavy footfall like a department store/train station? Will wiping toilet paper below waterline still suffice since it’s your ‘own’ poo?!

I don’t know whether I’m more intrigued than disgusted at this point!

Airbagger · 23/02/2026 05:12

I don’t make them unless I’m ill or something. Do people make these all the times?

Shitstix · 23/02/2026 05:22

HowBizxarre · 22/02/2026 23:39

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 stop it. People clearly flush first, wipe if need and then flush again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

No ones sticking their hand in the water whilst their poo is still in it hahaha.

What's a skid mark then? I always thiught it was a mark left by poo, you know that bit of poo in the toilet.

Anyone who thinks a hand in shitty water is better than a toilet brush is quite frankly, fucking gross.

Idontspeakgermansorry · 23/02/2026 06:19

Absolutely mental thread 😂😂 Please, just leave a toilet brush in the bathrooms guests use, if you don't want skid marks, because I will not be sticking my bare hand down anyone's toilet!!

But there is still poo in there? In the form of skid marks…

landlordhell · 23/02/2026 06:35

What it’s disgusting about a toilet brush? PP are advocating using their hands wrapped in toilet paper but a tool for the job is disgusting?
I have black loo brushes from IKEA. They are cleaned in a clean loo with toilet cleaner every week. They sit in toilet cleaner in between uses. I choose the black because the limescale stains can look like poo on white ones.

Furlane · 23/02/2026 06:39

What sort of toilet roll are people using that you can plunge it underwater and scrub - Blitz kitchen paper?

I wonder if there is a correlation between shoes on/off people. I’ve seen lots of posts saying they wouldn’t want to make their guests feel uncomfortable taking their shoes off, have to see their socks/feet, yet perfectly happy for them to stick their hands down the toilet trying to clean with disintegrating paper!

Maybe there is a market for a travel toilet brush?

landlordhell · 23/02/2026 06:41

I use a loo brush to clean any skid marks AFTER flushing. It’s not for breaking anything up! I squirt some toilet cleaner in too , brush and then flush with the brush held under the flush to ensure it is clean before putting it in its bowl of cleaner.

Coconutter24 · 23/02/2026 06:44

ShakyBake · 22/02/2026 21:28

Oh dear, I would feel awful if I were to have left any motion marks. Your poor friend

As others have said, you should have used toilet paper

If you did not want to use toilet paper surely you could have removed a sock or stocking, placed it over your entire hand and disposed of it discreetly in bin or taken it home?

What happened to logic in this country. Absolutely horrible.

Edited

You’re questioning the country and logic whilst suggesting someone use a sock or a stocking to clean up after themselves??

ClaredeBear · 23/02/2026 06:47

I absolutely do not want a wet festering loo brush in my house. I usually find leaving it a moment and a second flush does the trick but if not, I use rubber gloves and tissues and give them a good wash afterwards. If I was in someone’s hand I’d bite the bullet and just give my hands a thorough wash.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 23/02/2026 06:47

Yeah, having a loo brush is disgusting but requiring any visitor to stick their hand in your toilet is absolutely fine 🙄

That's certainly what I'd do in someone else's place with no loo brush, but I'd be embarrassed to require guests to do the same.

I would not be able to face my friends again. Once something has been down the toilet I dispose of it. Would have flushed and flushed.

Jane143 · 23/02/2026 06:57

Was the skid above or below the water line? This is very relevant

WinterFrogs · 23/02/2026 06:59

Oh this is fun! Who doesn't love a Mumsnet toilet brush thread on a Monday morning 😂

So you're absolutely fine having rubber gloves in the house that have been down the toilet, but a brush is too much? You know you can clean toilet brushes too right.

bumphousebump · 23/02/2026 07:13

I used to work as a cleaner and emptying out the bowl, using a toilet brush to create a suction so the water emptied, then using brush and bleach, with gloves, was how the ex submariner who was my boss at the time taught me to do it. I have a bog brush I.

paintedpanda · 23/02/2026 07:15

I think I live on a different planet to some MNers. I’m team silicone toilet brush.

OneBadKitty · 23/02/2026 07:20

Really? You all wrap your hands in toilet paper and use it like a toilet brush? And you think that is preferable to using a toilet brush?

Right... MN is weird! It's like a parallel world

This is why I have a toilet brush for people to use.

We have a separate toilet and bathroom and if guests were expected to clean the toilet with their hand it would first require a lot of sleeve rolling, then they would have to dash from the toilet to bathroom next door with a dripping wet and poo covered hand.

Just trying to visualise how the paper method would be in reality. So wrapping hand in toilet paper, emerging it in the water, then you scrub the toilet, then because toilet paper disintegrated almost immediately once soggy the poo on it will leak through to your hand. Then you remove hand from water and have to peel of the soggy poo covered tissue off with your other hand so both hands now dirty, then with dripping hands would need to flush toilet, open toilet door, go to sink in bathroom and touch taps and soap dispenser to wash hands with your pooey hands! urrgh!

Definitely making sure there is a toilet brush always available in all my toilets from now on!

DuchessofStaffordshire · 23/02/2026 07:28

Has anyone got any environmentally friendly toilet cleaning tips? We don't own loo brushes and up until now I've encouraged everyone to squirt bleach in the loo after they've been, but I've realised this is pretty bad for the environment.

I’ve never found they clean very well, personally. Rubber gloves are very easy to clean as it’s just like washing your hands.
