Sometimes you just need a spud.

My aunt died this week. It was expected but we thought we'd have a bit more time.

Our diet mostly consisted of things we could eat with our hands. Today someone brought us a cottage pie. Hot. Meaty Savoury. Easy to eat. With spuds on top.

Not fancy potatoes. Boiled spuds mashed with a bit of butter, salt and pepper, ones.

Sorry to hear about your aunt 💔

Enjoy your cottage pie, it's difficult to chew and swallow food when you're upset x

When my mum died I was 11 weeks pregnant. I couldn’t think, never mind cook and when I tried to eat food (which was processed and instant),I couldn’t chew, couldn’t swallow. My mouth was so dry.

my (ironically vegetarian) dropped off a homemade lasagne a few days later. All gooey and cheesy, homely and full of love and care. It still sticks in my mind as a true act of thoughtfulness and selflessness.

Im sorry for your loss.

We hid it away until everyone left, then heated it up and ate it. Laughing and joking about cutlery.

Sally (not her real name) is not my first aunt to die. She is my sixth. And she was a party queen.

I've been blessed by having all of them in my life. I hope I am as good an aunt as they were.

When my friend’s DH died I took a few homemade ready meals for her. During the next few days she texted me to say she was eating one of my meals. I was pleased she was eating something.

I’m sorry for your loss.

When I am upset or not feeling well I need what I call 'fork food'. That is, tasty, all in one, wettish food that is easy to eat with just a fork. Not dry, doesn't need to be cut, can just be eaten out of a bowl. For me, that is cottage pie, fish pie, tuna macaroni - that kind of thing. However much I might enjoy a roast, salad, jacket potato, pie with pastry etc., those have to be cut up and assembled on the fork - all I want is something I can just spoon (fork) into my mouth that still tastes nice.

I think your post is all the more beautiful and poignant for being descriptive without a specific point.

Some days you just need mashed potato or macaroni cheese.
