A creative or other skill you wish you were good at but aren't?

I have been trying to draw simple things for most of my life and can't grasp it at all. Practice does not always make perfect. But I don't care so much about that as I do writing and poetry. I can't do either! Someone once told me not to fret about poetry as no one liked it anyway, but I certainly do and read it often.

On the other hand, I am great with 3D art, can create excellent vintage collages and am a very good cook.

Watercolour painting, I've tried and tried, and while I can see some improvement, I know I'll never be more than a beginner.

Placestogo · 21/02/2026 16:14

Tennis… i cannot move past the beginners group… it doesnt help that i dont play in winter and so every spring, i re-join the beginners group… i probably should have started when i was young…

I write, I'm an author. So I am a creative. But I cannot draw or paint to save my life. When my kids were little they used to laugh at my attempts to draw Postman Pat or Thomas the Tank Engine. My artistic ability is so so low that I almost can't comprehend being able to draw something that looks like the thing it is. I would LOVE to be able to paint! My DDs MIL is an artist and she's always knocking up a big canvas for someone's living room (I've got a couple of her art pieces) and oh how I wish I could do that.

Or sew. Would like to be able to make my own clothes. Also laughably bad at that.

Pinknotpurple · 21/02/2026 16:19

Just been wrestling with a crochet kit. Watched a video about how to make a magic circle and decided to put it away until I'm feeling braver! 😁

StructuredChaos · 21/02/2026 16:23

It's daunting when you've tried something for years and you can't progress at all. I think we are all born with our brains adapted to different ways of seeing or thinking, and my hand to eye is atrocious, unless it's collage.

Many people say anything can be learned but I disagree. You can push it but never quite get there.

I would love to be able to dance. I'm quite fit but have no coordination. I struggle with even the simplest routines in my cardio class.

ValleyClouds · 21/02/2026 16:26

I’m disabled and one of my hands doesn’t function. I’d love to be able to sew and make dresses 👗

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/02/2026 16:35

I’d like to be able to play the piano. I had lessons for about 5 years. It doesn’t show!

Use a sewing machine. I was shite at it at school. My grandparents bought me a sewing machine and it gathered dust for decades.

Meanwhile my friend made herself school skirts, curtains, Roman blinds …

The sewing teacher hated me. I remained firmly on the bottom table for 2 years practicing buttonholes.
It didn’t help that I broke the machine needle nearly every lesson. 😂

aintnospringchicken · 21/02/2026 16:50

I would love to be able to knit or crochet.I’ve tried both and absolutely suck at it.
DCs tell me I’m good at drawing but I beg to differ. I would like to be able to produce a water colour that actually resembles the subject matter.

That's weird because I always thought if you're creative it means the right side of your brain is more dominant? So better at art, music and words 🤔 Rather than logic, maths and science?

I'm shit at sport. Literally cannot run, jump, catch or throw. I was always the last one to be picked for the team at school. But I can play tennis and badminton like a pro, so weird 😂

BasiliskStare · 21/02/2026 17:53

I would love to be able to sing. But I can't hold a tune in a bucket. Doesn't stop me singing but unfortunately not great for those around me 😊

ETA I am not bad at art but singing - just can't do. Don't know if that is left brain right brain thing.

I'm a fairly good crocheter (and a better knitter), but I've always found magic circles inexplicably fiddly and tricky!

1000StrawberryLollies · 21/02/2026 17:56

I'd like to be creative with the hobbies I already do, iyswim. Knitting and crochet are creative in the sense that you're creating something, but really all I'm doing is following instructions. I'd love to be able to go off-piste, adapt patterns ot design them myself, but I don't think my brain is creative in that way!

StructuredChaos · 21/02/2026 18:00

Well, I am left handed Grin
I think harnessing both sides of the brain is necessary. I feel nebulous and dreamy, have trouble making ideas concrete. great imagination and very quick mind but it runs ahead and spoils everything.

The only thing I could ever slow down for was yoga/meditation.

When I try to draw or paint it's like fighting through a thicket of thorns!

My musical ability is on a par with my artistic one. I can write, and that is pretty much literally it. Oh no, I can ride horses quite well. Not a lot of use that one either though.

And I can barely count to five.

I can ride horses too and can drive and reverse park into the tiniest space.

Struggle to walk upright most days without falling over or tripping over something or dropping something or banging into things 😅 Proper klutz. But I excelled at martial arts, never worked this out 🤔

cheapskatemum · 21/02/2026 18:41

It’s sewing for me too, specifically sewing using a sewing machine as I hand sew things all the time. I wish a woman would come up with an idiot-proof sewing machine design. I have one, but just the thought of trying to thread the thing puts me off using it. Then I know I’ll get the tension wrong. I would love to choose my own fabrics & use patterns to make flattering and individual clothes that actually fit me. Or even just alter shop bought garments so they fit better (which I sometimes do by hand). Ah well, maybe I’ll have time to figure it out & get practicing in retirement.

Grindingggmygear · 21/02/2026 18:43

I wish I could sew. I can sew but I’d love to be really good at it. It’s never going to happen.

puppyparent · 21/02/2026 18:46

Selecting paint colours for walls - every time is a fail
Flower arranging - seems easy but isn’t
French braiding hair - don’t sure what I’m doing wrong
The art of parallel parking

MayPeasBeWithYou · 21/02/2026 18:48

Anything involving bodily control and coordination. Dancing, yoga, lunges, swimming... useless!

I'm not so sure about that. I'm really good at words (teach 3 foreign languages and am a Times cryptic crossword fiend) but that's not creative. If anything, it's the logical, grammatical side of language that I love. But I'm awful at maths and science. And I'm quite musical, but not artistic.
