SEN PARENTS SUPPORT GROUP - Thread 1

mumofoneAloneandwell · 20/02/2026 15:35

Hey everyone

this is the original thread that was started for half term:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5491563-half-term-sen-parents-support-group?page=1

but we’re carrying it on since it’s been helpful

all parents of sen kids are welcome - also those who’s sen kids are now adults!

safe space to vent, share advice, tips and tricks, share good news and bad, and just chit chat and be 🙂

i am a mum of one dd. She’s 6 and is autistic and not yet verbal. It’s just us, no support system so I am thankful for the people on here keeping me company through the journey ❤️

Half Term SEN Parents Support Group | Mumsnet

Dd(6) who has autism and is non verbal had today had an average day one meltdown over her hands being sticky after she STUCK THEM IN ICING?! 😂🙆‍♀️...

Hi everyone

An apology for neglecting my most important thread - and for getting into beef over pegging/lazy wives/Helen Flanagan and the like

I hope youre all well - in the month of June I have a few plans and one is to be consistent in checking in here

How are all your dcs? How have they coped with the heatwave?

Mine is fine. Still no news on a school placement and we have done little home learning. She is an expert in popping to the shops for a little treat, and soft play, though 😄

June for us is going to be:
Using proloquo2go consistently daily
Mummy trying to help her make friends
Expanding on safe foods

❤️

Do you have any plans for June? It starts on a Monday as well so I am declaring it a fresh start here 😌

DS had second 'year to go' to GCSE maths test adhd it didn't go well, I was so hoping we could get maths off the worry list. I wish I hadn't supported moving him to the top set. I hoped it might be a confidence boost, but that's just the wrong approach for him, and he's now got behind when he was doing quite well.

So what will happen, will he go down a set?

Youve done nothing wrong and thats what these exams are for!

No they did move him down this term, fortunately. I'm just hoping he's just catching up and will get back on track.

@mumofoneAloneandwell - chuffed about your daughter's school, that's great news.

We re going through the pain of End of Year exams, what an absolute pain! I ve been going through each line for him for 10 subjects while working two jobs ! So I feel for you

what has he been using for studying ?

I think our adhd kids are expected to struggle towards gcse , what grades do you have in mind? I’m sure you know how unis work, requirements are not sky high, he ll be fine…

Echobelly · 01/06/2026 22:41

I'd be happy for him to get 5 subjects and 5s and 4s. I'm think he'll be able to manage that. He may manage a 6 in Drama, and in maths if he gets back on track. I'm OK to forget about History and English Lit. English Language is going to be the bugger, but if he can just get over his 'writing block' at least that doesn't take as much revision the same way.

I don't mind set 2 for maths at all - I was always in it and got a B. I think his maths problem is partly set 1 and may also be a bit of the step up to GCSE maths.

Have used Save My Exams a bit, but not methodically, want to look at Quizlets but I just couldn't get my head around it. Maybe one to master over summer.

I felt a little reassured today to see that even I think the minimum he's likely to get would be more than enough to get him on L2 Foundation Animal Management course at Capital City College, for example. He's keen to do Animal Management after GCSEs, so probably worst case scenario is he does a foundation L2 of animal management and retakes English Language, and then can go on to L3 in it if he wants because hopefully we will be more ready for it by then.

In much better news, DS was quite happy with history exam today. He couldn't write something for the longer question, but in the last ten minutes he did get something down for it. We're both so pleased - it doesn't matter if the mark isn't good, the important thing is that he's had a proper crack at completing it and that he can see it helps to practise writing down even some basic answers. It also means he's come back from the big panic in English Lit last week, which is great.

Okay well done ds!

How many is that left?

Yes, i think that the skills for history and English are similar so he's definitely on the right path if he coped with history ❤️ - and I agree that the thing is that he tries his best - thats what life is going to be about

Me and dd are home, we popped out briefly to the shops. She's terrible at eating and has so far had two rashers of bacon and a piece of KFC chicken

Got rice on now which hopefully she will eat xx

Quizlet is good but not as structured as Seneca (have you tried it )?

not sure what L2,L3 is, is he progressing into 6th form after gcse?

LizzieW1969 · 02/06/2026 19:59

DD1 has made a good start to the new half-term, almost getting to college on time and not complaining about dizziness, weakness or nausea.

I think the iron medication is making a difference, which is very encouraging.

L2 foundation is a one year course equivalent of GCSE, so students can can catch up if they haven't got good GCSE grades but can get ready for level for L3, which is A level or an A-level equivalent BTech/T-level qualification. 6th form colleges will offer foundation courses (often with maths or English retakes), not sure schools do so much. It's all pretty new to me too.

The school uses Seneca for science, but a free version.

Ah I see … Seneca free is so so, we have the paid one (not expensive at all) it’s great and has different approaches to learning … worth perhaps having a look? Xx

Is it just science of other subjects too? They use it for science at school and I'd say that's one area he's doing well.

What I'd love is a system that allows you have a parent account so you can maybe see what your kid is doing somehow? It would make it much easier to support him.

Yes Seneca is for everything in GCSE!

it has simple and complex version and it does have parents account. You can set him some lessons yourself and see how he gets one (has exams, quizzes etc) really worth trying it’s truly cost effective

I got it for my Y9 boy but now I also use it for my Y6 as it has numerous levels… Seneca maths is bit rubbish but the rest is fab. For maths we do dr frost xxx
