Mine is amongst others that carbonara should only ever be made with long pasta, none of your penne, or fusili nonsense.

And latte should be pronounced with a short “a”. It’s not lartey.

Certo!

What would you call them if not "aunt" and "uncle" though?

DD calls DH's sister's husband "Uncle ". Should she be calling him "Auntie 's husband" instead?

“Dear Uncle-by-marriage…”

Another hill I'll die on; people only say this if they don't have any good friends who care about their kids.

Yes I’m Auntie CraftyNavySeal despite both me and DP being only children, if we have kids we’ll also choose some aunties and uncles for them since they won’t have any otherwise.

But dogs breed.
So you expect owners to take on a litter of puppies even if they don’t want more than one dog?

Sorry but I don't understand.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 19/02/2026 15:31

The only thing that should be coffee flavoured is coffee. It is a drink flavour. I will accept you adding milk and/or sugar, even having it cold, but not putting it in chocolate, or cake or sweets.

(this is even more my view when you realise coffee chocolate was invented in order to undermine the Japanese love of tea. Apparently coffee flavoured chocolate was launched after poor coffee sales in Japan so children were used to the coffee flavour and would be more likely to try the coffee drink. )

A relative of mine tried incredibly hard to rescue a dog and despite being the perfect adoptee on paper, none of several rescues would let her have one.

So after a frustrating few months at a difficult time in her life she thought, 'fuck this' and bought a puppy off a friend of a friend who bred dogs on a small scale.

You said people should ONLY take on rescues

So if an owner’s dog has a litter…. You want the owner to give the dogs to a shelter rather than sell them?

@GreenEyesIsBack. Move up on that hill and make room for me please. Humans cannot change sex.

Budge up for another.

On food truffle oil is not a good addition to anything.

Yorkshire puddings have absolutely no place on Christmas Dinner.

A UK-based holiday is NOT a stay-cation. It is a UK-based holiday. A stay-cation involves staying at home and sleeping in your own bed, having days out exploring your local area.

Oh God this. That was how the word started, wasn't it? then some idiot used it wrong, and now most people use it wrong.
The idea that a UK holiday is always cheaper than an overseas one is hilarious.

WallaceinAnderland · 19/02/2026 15:33

Humans cannot change sex and sometimes sex matters. Keep female single sex facilities for females only. They are there for a reason. Women matter.

If you need benefits to top up your husband income to survive then you’re not a ‘stay-at-home mum’ - you’re simply unemployed (which is fine but you’re not a bloody housewife).

It's a fucking paninO.

It's eSpresso.

And Italian food doesn't need any 'new takes' or 'fusion'. Just invent new food if you want it.

I hear you. I went to Orlando and the company chose an Italian restaurant with “elevated” Italian cuisine

it was calorie laden slop.

I cook Italian, I like to stick to authenticity as it’s great as it is done in Italy. No American is going to improve on it.

I don't think people should breed dogs for profit. If someone's dog has a litter, I don't think they should be sold, rather given away, although I guess if someone insists on paying for the puppy that's OK.
I meant in the normal common-sense scenario of someone deciding they want a dog and going to a breeder; I think people should go to shelters instead.

CitizenofMoronia · 19/02/2026 15:36

allowed = permission
aloud = to noise
the two are not interchangeable

ImWearingPantaloons · 19/02/2026 15:37

Yorkshire puddings belong with roast beef. Only.

Matcha is disgusting and smells of liquidised grass clippings.

GreenEyesIsBack · 19/02/2026 15:37

Cats are fuzzy little annoying pests.

A “holiday” in the UK is not a holiday

Bjorkdidit · 19/02/2026 15:37

Cold food should be served at room temperature not straight from the fridge.

If it includes any ingredients except cream or salt it is not butter, so don't call it that.

But if someone is only accepting a dog because it’s free then it’s unlikely they seriously want the dog or can afford its care? Responsibly breeding a litter from a health tested bitch and stud, raising the puppies well and ensuring both the high & stud are accomplished in their respective fields is expensive. Why shouldn’t costs be met for that? Obviously I’m not talking about when two random people decide to breed their dogs together to make £50 in their kitchen but when people do it properly.

Poststandardisation · 19/02/2026 15:38

People should have at least a grade B/6 in gcse Lang before being allowed to post ANYTHING on sm. Typos and the odd spelling error, I can live with, but if feels like we're heading into a pre-standardised era.

This also applies to what used to be regarded as 'proper' publications and novels. Especially novels published on Amazon.
'Stuck a cord'
'Rolling in the isles'.
Fuck off. Or learn to google.

And it's not elitism. Most of my older gen family left school between 12 and 15. They were all able to write and spell English mainly accurately.

HeadyLamarr · 19/02/2026 15:38

Low fat versions of dairy products are horrible franken-foods that have no place in a sensible diet. Just have the real thing but less of it if you're trying to cut down.

Then you would very likely get people taking on animals they can’t afford.

Better to sell but have strict parameter and checks in place
