Whatever happened to sugar lumps?

I was trying to explain the idea of sugar lumps to my slightly baffled kids. Why did sugar lumps disappear? I have not seen one in over a decade

Sugar cubes! Not lumps! What is a sugar lump?! 😆

They’re called sugar lumps where I come from! (Essentially the same thing as cubes)

“sugar lump” was even used as a term of endearment when I was young

MonsteraDeliciosa · 19/02/2026 19:14

Oh I remember sugar lumps; and they were called “lumps” not cubes (where I lived, at least) even though they were cubes.

I loved the little two pack. I used to go to Littlewoods cafe with my granny in the 1970s and she’d always ask for extra sugar lumps with her tea so DB and I could put them in our soft drinks!

I got some today from Waitrose! They’re called La Perrucha and come in a really cheerful box.

I went to Betty's tea room in Harrogate on Monday first time seen sugar lumps for years

BelleEpoque27 · 19/02/2026 19:19

My hairdresser's uses them! I love them, never have them in tea/coffee but they're delicious to suck on surreptitiously while my hair dye is percolating.

You used to be able to buy them in a box rather than in a bag or whatever. Try the poundworld type shops , they might have them for sale.

CoastalCalm · 19/02/2026 19:30

We buy them regularly all supermarkets seem to have them

Twinklewonderkins · 19/02/2026 19:31

Waitrose has a few types!

Heyhelga · 19/02/2026 19:32

They quite rightly disappeared off the face of the earth.

EdinaTheConfessor · 19/02/2026 19:32

This reminds me of when I worked as a waitress in a posh restaurant 25 years ago. We served coffee with the white and brown rustic lumps and little jugs of milk and cream.
While I was on shift I would treat myself to a coffee with a brown sugar lump and cream, pure indulgence I would never dream of drinking coffee like that now!

gototogo · 19/02/2026 19:35

You can still buy them, saw them in a cafe only this week, can also buy mixed white and brown in lumps rather than cubes

ShamedBySiri · 19/02/2026 19:36

Horse owners realised they weren’t good for the horses’ teeth.

TamarindCottage · 19/02/2026 19:39

I don’t take sugar in hot drinks but my husband does. We buy brown sugar cubes which are kept in a lidded sugar bowl so they remain unsneezed upon

its not that really, its the fact that some horses can develop laminitis due to too much sugar. We use polos instead.

VikingLady · 19/02/2026 19:53

They sell them in the multinational mini supermarket near us. Varying sizes and types of sugar.

badger2005 · 19/02/2026 19:56

This is one of those happy threads.
Also - that description from a PP of her having her coffee with cream and a brown sugar lump while on shift... that sounds lovely! I really want to have a coffee like that!

FourForksSake · 19/02/2026 20:07

Tea at Betty’s - sugar lumps not cubes. Also hot water and a tea strainer. Lovely BrewCake

Late last year, I bought a box in Toronto for our hotel room (along with tea and milk) and they're now in my sugar caddy at home. Very pleasing.

Can you still get the brown sugar crystals on a stick?

Garman · 19/02/2026 20:09

I see them all the time, I’m in Ireland.

The new box is delightful, isn’t it?

You can get silver spoon white cubes from Tesco and Asda, or Billingtons demerara pretty much everywhere, but La Perruche tastes better Grin

Minimelanie · 19/02/2026 20:34

I was in a restaurant (UK) the other day and they had them on the table. Didn’t like the thought of people breathing all over them though

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/02/2026 22:35

Heyhelga · 19/02/2026 19:32

They quite rightly disappeared off the face of the earth.

They clearly didn't as several posters have said they buy them regularly.

BauhausOfEliott · 19/02/2026 22:41

I use them for preparing absinthe.

I just saw this the other day! With an absinthe spoon

Well this thread has been a pleasing little stroll down memory lane, 😁
