Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

Because it started in 2019 (no one is denying that!) and was flagged to the WHO and first reported on NYE AKA the 31st December 2019!

You might win something for daftest comment on here.

Your weird insistence that people are misremembering is far dafter.

the80sweregreat · 19/02/2026 16:06

A colleague of mine returned to the UK from Mexico a week or so before full lockdown and all they were given was a leaflet about washing your hands at the airport, no quarantine or anything too scary.

Why is it weirder? As yet not one person who claimed to know about it in early December, November and even as far back as October (that mum in the WhatsApp group is apparently physic) has to my knowledge provided any proof.

I saw an article online end of December 2019 saying about a new virus and the photo was one of the coronavirus. The comments were mostly it was flu and which symptoms to look out for.

My insistence comes from frustration and concern for a lot of posters’ critical thinking skills frankly! I’m shocked at the mad conspiracy theories people are touting on here and complete refusal to accept it wasn’t in the media at that time despite not a single person being able to present one example to support what the hell they’re talking about

No, you are definitely not concerned about the mental wellbeing of strangers on the internet.

Critical thinking isn’t mental wellbeing…

Oh my god I can’t handle this thread anymore.

But on a more lighthearted note so many of you remind me of this scene from the Simpsons.

Do you remember this Covid news footage?
Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 16:24

I’m not photographing my diary for the internet but it’s on my desk in front of me.
I also remember the school trip question and the fact it would now go ahead.
I am not suggesting a global cabal has deleted this - I am just genuinely intrigued

Op - for the sake of all the posters who have been asking, please can you write it out verbatim

CmonBobby · 19/02/2026 16:26

FlowerFairyDaisy · 19/02/2026 11:13

And we were told at the time that COVID originated in a 'wet market'. And all the 'conspiracy theorists' speculated that the more likely origin was the Wuhan laboratory and then a few years later, it is found to have originated form the lab..

Told by our Government to stay at home while they had parties.

Told by out Government that patients testing positive for COVID were definetely not being discharged from hospitals back to care homes.

The Nightingale Hospital that was never required. All the scary new footage.

No, I don't automatically believe everything reported on the news or said by a Government minister or even a 'great scientific mind'.

Ok, well use your own brain then. If Covid was here in November 2019, and not just here but virulently here, rampaging around your office, then clearly the pandemic would have been months ahead of the time line that actually did transpire. Even if you were patient zero and your office ground zero then we would have been at 40000 deaths a day by the middle of December if not before. By March when we went into lockdown we would have been at total NHS collapse, societal breakdown, hundreds of thousand of deaths a day.
How could a very infectious virus take down your whole office in November, before the scientist even think it infected its first human, without then spreading out across Britain until 10 weeks later?

PocketSand · 19/02/2026 16:28

I think that what caused the fear and exacerbated the lockdown narrative was the purported speed of spread. That a new virus reported in China on 31 December was causing mass death in Europe within a couple of months.

Given the restriction of information for whatever reason it is far more likely that the virus was circulating before being officially recognised or named.

It’s also the life course of coronavirus to become less virulent and more contagious so that more hosts survive to spread the virus. Before Omicron the fear was for countries like Africa who didn’t have mass vaccination and lockdown. Turned out mass vaccination and lockdown might not have been necessary.

A large number of those who died were already vulnerable to severe flu like illness or received poor care when the virus was in its most virulent stage.

To deal with new viruses of this type (bracketing messing about in viral labs to make virulent viruses more contagious) we need to understand how to treat the most vulnerable in the virulent stage before natural mutation.

The narrative that this was a new virulent strain that occurred naturally and spread across the globe and was only defeated by lockdown and mass vaccination is not credible.

No I don’t

it sounds like a scene from a film Contagion, the virus in that film caused fitting

And yet the virus was eventually given a name ... COVID-19.

Not COVID-20.

Yes, because it was officially discovered on 31 December 2019, that bit is quite well documented!

Honestly I wouldn't waste your time. Multiple posters have tried to engage in reasoned researched based discussion and several posters just don't seem to want to hear facts.

I remember going to stay in a premier inn in Derbyshire for the weekend 2 weeks before lockdown (it had to be then because the following friday my ds had a cold and his school wouldn’t allow him to attend and that was the week before lockdown started) Anyway, in the premier inn there were signs everywhere about keeping distance and nobody was touching any door handles with their bare hands. Yet we also went to museums and restaurants and there was no change at all. So some were taking it seriously and some places weren’t

I went to a stakeholder engagement event in London on 4 March where a senior civil servant kept telling us to wash our hands, and yet there were about 100 in a room together all day, sharing buffet food etc. Totally insane looking back. And I think I had it too, I'd had to go home sick from work about a week before with a fever and cough that was still lingering and I lost my sense of taste for weeks. It was only once that was reported as a symptom many months later that I made the connection.

It does indeed sound like footage from a film. Except it wasn't.

Many posters on here remember the footage. Those that don't remember it probably just missed those particular reports.

It is weird that some people are so insistent that it didn't happen and that we didn't see it. They probably just didn't see it themselves on the news at the time.

This. I clearly remember having a panic attack seeing this footage. I was absolutely terrified.

No-one is saying that those videos were not out there. The discrepancy is when they were shown. There is no way videos were released before the end of December.

The very first death wasn’t until January so no footage of people dropping dead would have been shown on mainstream media in December.

RudolphTheReindeer · 19/02/2026 16:53

I remember seeing lots about a virus on Twitter with videos of people fitting in china, (which was described as cytogenic Crisis?). That does seem a little odd now as covid never seemed to actually present like that.

I vaguely recall that it was all being covered up by china and mainstream media weren't covering it at all. I remember watching and observing it over a few weeks. I did actually start to stock up on a few basics which was fortunate when things really took off and everyone went a bit crazy.

As china tried very hard to keep it all covered up and deny anything was going on, could it be they officially recognised it at the end of December 2019 and this is whats causing a lot of confusion re timelines?

I'm as convinced as you OP, I had the drink with friends before Christmas, and I had without doubt heard about it on BBC radio news.

It was of course not a big story, it was not called COVID, there was just reports of a viral outbreak in China.

This would have been from mid December 2019.
