Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

WTF way to gaslight someone

She’s gaslighting herself!

OverlyFragrant · 19/02/2026 12:37

Brewtiful · 19/02/2026 12:31

No gaslighting here just facts. There were no news reports on the BBC regarding COVID before Christmas in December 2019.

It wasn't called covid. It was a 'respiratory virus'. There were news reports, but nothing dramatic, just a quick bulletin.
I recall reading about it Private Eye with a colleague in between Xmas and NY and remarking "this is going to completely fuck us over", then in January, working in a hospital and overseeing bedspace being made in corridors and outpatient clinics for the 'Chinese virus'. Still not called covid-19, but definitely aware of it.

BusterGonad · 19/02/2026 12:37

Also it was actually determined to be coronavirus at the start of December in Wuhan, so some news must've leaked out even if unoffical.

I lived in the area it started in Italy, next to the hospital. It was very much real for me with all the ambulances outside my living room window. All of our town had to be tested for C19 antibodies. We had army tanks blocking all roads leading out of town, armed police, police in choppers flying above us checking if anyone left their house & if they had they were wearing a mask. If we did go out we were stopped by armed military to see our permission to be outside as certificates. Hazmat suits and full CSI taping off for any suspected cases. Anti infestation came and sprayed all the roads, pavements and buildings. We had almost no food, had to ration and lost over 10kg each. Later when vaccination was mandatory, the unvacciated were not allowed to go to work, travel on public transport or enter most shops. ( I am not one of those) It was awful and I haven't mentally recovered yet from the whole experience. It felt like I was living in some sort of film of a very scary future.
Went to UK at the end of it and thought the Covid restrictions were an absolute joke no one took it seriously.

I'm not just referring to it as using the name COVID though, I'm referring to any reports. If you look through the thread the first report of a mystery illness on the BBC is in January 2020.

Can't you just type here what you actually wrote in your diary, rather than telling us what you wrote about?
Is a friend getting a letter from school about a child's trip really something you would put in your diary?

I have ! This is what I wrote. Yes I wrote about the trip going ahead as friend had mentioned it had been questioned. Her child was also wanting to bring back christmas presents so wanted to go. My diary is very boring. I've written it since I was 12 😂
I just chronicle my day and nothing much happens (which I'm very grateful for as I like a quiet life)

There were no tests after COVID was named as a 'thing' and yet people were still calling in sick as they were symptomatic and that was deemed as good enough.

I have never seen people go down so ill within hours of one another. None of us subsequently had COVID. We had all been exposed to it in the November, 2019.

It was here, it just wasn't yet going to need Government action. Not sure why anyone would find that so difficult to beleive.

I neither belive not disbelieve....just saying what you believe doesn't make it fact

MotherofPufflings · 19/02/2026 12:41

The first I heard about a mystery virus was from a MN thread, which I think was between Xmas and new year 2019. Might be interesting to find the date of the earliest thread on it.

TheFairyCaravan · 19/02/2026 12:42

My brother and SIL went on a holiday to China in November/December 2019. I don’t remember any issues about safety there atm, tbh. He did come back poorly though, with a respiratory illness, which he passed on to our mother. She’s asthmatic and it made her incredibly unwell.

FlowerFairyDaisy · 19/02/2026 12:44

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 12:33

Definitely not a film and definitely not on any phone

I actually remember discussing this news footage with my exSIL on a dog walk. I remember it because I had not long split with her brother and we met in a place I had never visited before. I cannot find any messages between us to confirm whether we met before or after Christmas 2019/2020 at the moment.

I remember specifics of the converation that we had about it and we have actually discussed the exact footage shown and mentioned by OP (of people collapsing in the street and convulsing on stretchers) since then as well because our views on it differed.

BusterGonad · 19/02/2026 12:45

I found this on Facebook, so they knew about it in the Philippines.

CatusFlatus · 19/02/2026 12:46

That's because it was Golden Wonder not Walkers. They had the colours the opposite way around to Walkers certainly in the 70's and possibly after that too. I was taken aback with how wrong it was as a child moving from London where we always had GW crisps to The Midlands where Walkers were dominant. It was all just very, very wrong!

Needtoughlove · 19/02/2026 12:46

BusterGonad · 19/02/2026 12:29

I agree, there was a lot of talk about a mysterious pneumonia type virus. I find it crazy the amount of posters going on about Covid not being talked about until 2020, there was definitely talk of a virus but it hadn't been named Covid as yet.

Edited

It wasn’t Covid though. We had a particularly rough flu season that year.

I tend to believe what I experience and what is logical rather than what world leaders decide tell me sometimes.

That doesn't tell you that anyone outside of China knew... It's just saying that it is now known that this is the day the first cases in China were reported but at the time they were flu like symptoms.

Also this article is dated 19th December 2019 so much more fitting with OPs memories

FloridaCheese · 19/02/2026 12:49

I remember this. I remember footage of a man waking down the street the collapsed. I remember thinking this is going to be bad when it gets here.

You realise that's a post summarising the pandemic after the event?

On This Day posts are usually a couple of years after. We know now COVID 19 began end Nov/beginning Dec 2019, actual reporting of a serious flu like infection started very end of Dec/beg Jan.

Edit spelling/clarity

That footage exists the question seems to be when people saw it.

ItsNeverDuck · 19/02/2026 12:53

I saw the footage, I started following the story at the end of December early Jan, but I didn’t see the footage on the bbc or news, it was clips on reddit and social media.

walllaw · 19/02/2026 12:56

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 09:10

It was DEFINITELY on the TV. We were at my late PIL house for dinner. They watched the BBC news on TV
The bbc were definitely reporting before Jan. The reports were mainly how it wouldn't get here. The BBC were reporting as a friends child went on a trip to China with school and school sent a letter to say it was safe despite news reports as they were going to a different bit of china

I remember going running, listening to James O'Brien on LBC, and he had a caller - a British guy teaching English in China - giving updates from Wuhan, and I want to say that was right around, or just after, Christmas.

I was one of the people who ordered N95 masks right around then, which I ended up donating to Chelsea & Westminster Hospital during the shortages.

I didn't see the footage you mentioned, OP.

Right on 10th Dec I wrote about the trip to China still going ahead as xxxxxxx (child's parents name) had received a letter and that the illness outbreak was in a place no where near when they were going.
Dec 18th we went to pil for dinner and I wrote about the scary news report , the zipping up and the bags and stretchers /vans. I say it's weird and scary footage. We were home by 8pm as we then watched a Christmas film before bed.

There was an avian flu outbreak around that time in China. But it's such a vast country the school may have written out on the basis that is was unlikely to catch it in the same way you are unlikely to get Ebola in South Africa if its happening in West Africa.

There were definitely media reports about a virus prior to Christmas. Not footage of people being zipped into bags in the street though. It may have been a news report which showed old footage from bird flu outbreaks.

Two children in my daughter's class went back to Hong Kong with their parents for Christmas, they both came back with head colds and wearing masks to school as it is common practice to mask up there. Lot of eyebrows raised at school, if only we'd known that 3 months later......

Derek Acorah didn't live in Wuhan. 😂 I'm not talking about people in the UK having covid, just reports from China about an unusual strain of a pneumonia type virus.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 19/02/2026 13:00

Plus there's this . So you probably did see a news report on the BBC, it just wasn't called Covid.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30185-9/fulltext

In December, 2019, Wuhan, Hubei province, China, became the centre of an outbreak of pneumonia of unknown cause, which raised intense attention not only within China but internationally. Chinese health authorities did an immediate investigation to characterise and control the disease, including isolation of people suspected to have the disease, close monitoring of contacts, epidemiological and clinical data collection from patients, and development of diagnostic and treatment procedures. By Jan 7, 2020, Chinese scientists had isolated a novel coronavirus (CoV) from patients in Wuhan.
