Share a car with someone whose cats have fleas?

my friend’s cats have fleas! They are treating the cats and their home with sprays, shampoos and vacuuming etc. Their cats don’t go in their car.

my question is this…

  1. They have asked if we want to visit and my kid sleepover. I said no.
  2. should my kid travel in their car? it would be for about an hour as we are doing a day trip together. Otherwise my kid comes in my car.
  3. is it a risk to allow my friend’s kid to come back to our house ?

I'd avoid it if I could, to be honest.

I recall that we once had a cat flea from a friend with cats and it didn't cause huge difficulty—I think it died off pretty quickly—but I'd rather not take the risk.

My mum always told me that cat fleas can't live on humans. Have done a quick search and it seems that Mum was right.

Cat and dog fleas still bite humans , I would put off visiting for now

I'd avoid visiting for now, but the other things would be fine. They need an animal for their full life cycle so while they'll bite a human if no cat, they can't just start an infestation in the car for instance. The reason that the house gets covered is that cats and dogs sleep in the same places regularly so the fleas can live in the soft furnishings as their "meal" comes back regularly. This is why animals like cows that don't make dens/nests don't get fleas (although they do get other parasites).

They are fleas, not poisonous spiders! What exactly are you worried about? They are annoying little feckers but that's about it. If they are treating the animals and the home in the way that you say, a trip in their car isn't going to cause you any issues! To be fair, even if they weren't treating the house, a trip in the car isn't going to be an issue. Fleas need an animal to feed off. They won't last long in a car.
