What do your kids want to be when they grow up?

Or if they are grown up, what did they want to be and did they become it?

DD and DS have a career day thing coming up soon and DD wants to be a vet which is pretty easy, but DS apparently wants to be a professional darts player “like grandad”. My dad is not a professional darts player, he plays darts and does do competitions but these are old boys comps at the pub. How am I going to dress up a 5 year old as a pro darts player? Fake pint and beer belly? He is dead set on it though so I guess I will have to work something out. Before this he wanted to be an explorer, so maybe pro darts is a more realistic career choice.

What did you want to be? I wanted to be a pop star but my mum told me “you need to be able to sing or have rich parents to pay for auto tune and you have neither”. Then I wanted to be a teacher, then work in the civil service (did an IR degree). Now I’m a private maths tutor so get to do all the fun teacher stuff without having to work in a school.

Our ten year old wants to be a dancer, although he said he won’t do it at the weekends as he’ll want to ‘chill out’. From her current interests I suspect our four year old would like to be some form of dictator, she would be great at it too.

thebeautifulsky · 18/02/2026 17:43

DS aged 9 - a train driver then aged 13, a car designer. Now a hospital Dr.
DD aged 9 - a teacher like me, aged 15 a midwife. Now a GP

DC1 wanted to be a bus driver but is now working full time as a physicist!

My ds wants to build hydro-electric plants and off-shore or mountain top wind turbines.

He's on track with a'levels in Maths, Physics & DT.

Waitingfordoggo · 18/02/2026 17:46

DD wanted to be a florist. She still REALLY likes plants but has applied to do Occupational Therapy at University next year.

DS wanted to be a ‘rockstar postman’. He is just about to finish college and is hoping to pursue a career in Fisheries management.

RipplePlease · 18/02/2026 18:47

My 28yo DS wants to work for a hedge fund and is almost there.
19yo DD is studying to be a Civil Engineer, but he’s not sure if that’s what he’ll end up pursuing.
DD17 wants to work in Nutrition.

Dsis wanted to be a geologist. She’s a doctor. I wanted to be the President of the U.S…. Became a writer.

Any chance you could go back to that ambition? I know nothing about you, but you can’t be any worse than the current incumbent.

I wanted to be a paramedic. I work in the NHS but in one of those much despised middle management roles.

DS1 wants to be an ethical hacker. Doing maths, physics and Computer science A Levels and currently researching uni options for 2027.
DD I have no idea! When she was little she wanted to be a princess and a cleaner. Some sort of Cinderella character. I can see her going into marketing or event management.
DS2 Fancies joining the police or something with horses, so maybe mounted police?! He does ride but I don’t think that on its own will be something he will make a living from.

elliejjtiny · 18/02/2026 19:42

19 year old - musician
17 year old - song writer/producer
15 year old - actor
12 year old - plumber
11 year old - maths teacher "at a school where they sit on bean bags"

I wanted to be a nurse or work with children with disabilities. I'm a sahm/carer to my disabled dc so I do exactly what I wanted but I don't get paid for it!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/02/2026 19:46

DS(17) - immunological research
DD(14) - Something to do with Geography. Or Army Music Corps.

Catnanna · 18/02/2026 19:55

My eldest went through various career choices. Originally thought about criminal law, but decided his morals wouldn’t let him defend guilty people. He then wanted to be a pilot but decided it was a glorified bus driver (I know that’s not the case) and no idea where got that thought from. He’s now a chartered engineer working in project management. Youngest always wanted to be a Mechanical Engineer. He’s also chartered working in Research & Development.
I wanted to join the MOD Police but my cousin who was in the army put me off. I became an insurance underwriter, then a STAM for about 12 years then joined the Civil Service and took early retirement a couple of years ago.

damntheyaremymonkeys · 18/02/2026 19:59

DD is 6 and for the last year or so has said she wants to be a vet in a zoo when she grows up.
i wanted to be a teacher and ended up working in early years when I grew up.

AfternoonTeaAddict · 18/02/2026 20:05

DS1 is 16 and wants to live in an apartment in Paris with alot of cats.

DS2 wants to run an amusement park.

DH wanted to be an archaeologist. He's thinking of starting a degree now at the age of 73. He was a geologist (or gravel monkey as they call it on The Big Bang Theory).

I wanted to be a showjumper. So thinking of that you could get a helmet, a hobby horse and carry some carrots.

HippyChickMama · 18/02/2026 20:08

Ds wanted to be a firefighter, he was obsessed with fire engines and fire safety right from nursery until he was 12. Unfortunately, he has very poor eyesight, and the optician broke the news to him that he wouldn’t meet the requirements. He’s at university now studying politics, planning to do a PGCE afterwards, teach for a while and then maybe stand for MP. He wants to be PM or education secretary.
Dd wanted to be Elsa from Frozen, then a mermaid, then a vet. She’s 12 now and has discovered a passion for historical costume, for the last 2 years she’s been set on becoming a costume designer for theatre and film.

Travelfairy · 18/02/2026 22:07

DD an actress and she's on her way already at 10 💕 but would like to be an art/drama teacher also and even at this young age I can see her doing exactly that.

DS wants to run his own business of some kind/maybe flip houses also and he likes the idea of architect either.

I'm glad neither wants to be a bloody influencer as most of their friends give that answer 🙄

CotswoldsCamilla · 18/02/2026 22:39

My 13 year old has told me she’d like to go into Private Equity. Not quite sure if she know what it is but we have a lot of friends in that field and they typically have very nice lifestyles.
This is a child I can barely get to do any homework.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 18/02/2026 22:56

DS 12 - something in railways. He’s mad about trains. Sometimes he wants to be a YouTuber making train videos - the next Francis Bourgeois basically.

soundsys · 18/02/2026 23:07

Eldest wants to be an architect and youngest a builder, so that could work well 🤣 Middle one wants to be an inventor and artist with a shop by the sea, that I'm supposed to run for him!

BarnacleBeasley · 18/02/2026 23:07

Oh I forgot that before Artist, DS wanted to be a Shop Seller. Then he thought maybe he would rather be the shop owner. Then (by the end of the 3 minute walk home from the shop) a builder who builds shops.

MertonDensher · 18/02/2026 23:09

DS (13) wants to be a sports lawyer. DH wanted to work in professional football and does. I wanted to write novels, and do.

RavenclawWitchy · 18/02/2026 23:18

Dd1 16 - Conservationist with a focus on wildlife habitats - starting her A level in Biology (extended for Ecology and Conservation) in September

Dd2 15 - Forensic Scientist with a focus on lab work and criminal trial expertise - A Level Biology (extended for analytical and applied sciences) and Chemistry starting September 2027

Clicheinaqashqai · 18/02/2026 23:22

DS 7 - Rollercoaster engineer
DD 4 - DJ

blanketsnuggler · 18/02/2026 23:33

DD wanted to a musical theatre performer from about the age of 3 (anyone remember the TV show High Five? That's what started it off) and she's now on track to train as a drama therapist. She still does Musical Theatre at uni though.
DS was always going to be an Engineer, now he's going to be an IP patent lawyer.
So they've both kind of stuck to their dreams which I'm pleased about.
