Does this need medical attention? (Yucky photo included)

My DH dropped a tin on his foot at work, he could see a blood blister forming and it was very sore.
He’s just come home and taken his shoe off and it looks like this 🤢

He doesn’t know if he should soak it, dress it, pop it or go to a pharmacist.

Does anyone know what the best thing would be to do?

Looks like the photo is still under review

Looks as if the nail needs trephining to release the trapped blood, that will relieve the pain. Minor injuries?

Minor injuries to relieve the pressure under the nail

OriginalSkang · 17/02/2026 18:32

Most definitely minor injuries

newornotnew · 17/02/2026 18:33

Yes that needs medical attention. Ring 111 or go to minor injuries.

Also needs putting in the accident book at work!

GhettoSnoopystar · 17/02/2026 18:33

Yes that absolutely warrants medical attention! Ouch.

wobblyweewoman · 17/02/2026 18:34

Is it painful?
Does he have tools and a steady hand?
Take a small drill bit, clean it, and screw it into the nail. After that dress it tightly until he feels the pain change in a few days then the nail will come off, don't throw it away because you can use it as a cover to stop the air getting on, just clean the nail bed and the nail, then put it back and wrap it tightly again.

This sounds like a bad idea.

Pepperedpickles · 17/02/2026 18:38

That looks awful. I would go to an and e with that.

WhatInFreshHell · 17/02/2026 18:38

I know this isn’t sporner corner but WOW!!! That’s gorgeous! I’m sure it doesn’t feel gorgeous though so minor injuries imo.

Crikey. Definitely don't do anything this stupid, OP!

blooooooor · 17/02/2026 18:38

Message your GP if you got an option and attach picture - I did that when I got bitten by one of my cats and my finger tripled in size, I was seen same day and was given antibiotics for infection. If you can’t message call them and say you need to see Someone who can take a look at infected toe.

MiddleAgedDread · 17/02/2026 18:39

Definitely minor injuries to get the blood drained which will relieve the pressure under the nail (which will inevitably drop off)

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 17/02/2026 18:42

I don’t think he should drill his nail. I think it needs draining by a medical professional in a sterile environment. He’ll lose that nail but the nail bed underneath will harden up

MoonlightMemories · 17/02/2026 18:42

What the heck was the tin made of.....lead!? That's disturbingly impressive the amount of damage it has done to his big toe....

I think it probably does needs draining at a minor injuries unit or similar and I wouldn't be surprised if the toe nail falls off too with the amount of swelling/bruising there is under and around it.

borntooobewild · 17/02/2026 18:43

Minor injuries for trephining (draining) ,instant relief from the pressure beneath the nail .

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 17/02/2026 18:46

Minor injuries clinic. That looks very painful! My sympathies to your DH.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 17/02/2026 18:48

Given the blister at the side, I’d sterilise a needle and pierce the bubble. The area under the nail will drain at the same time. There will probably be a lot to drain, looking at the pressure. I’d do it in a bathroom!

hby9628 · 17/02/2026 18:50

@WhatInFreshHelli thought the same! I would definitely get that checked. Please take videos/images of anything sporner related & post it on that section. Your DH will be a celeb over there!

hby9628 · 17/02/2026 18:56

In all seriousness I hope he is okay.

wobblyweewoman · 17/02/2026 18:57

I'm so surprised by people's answers
It's not infected so he doesn't need antibiotics
He's going to lose the nail and it needs to be pierced to relieve the pressure
No wonder emergency departments are full, why would a nurse in a hospital be better at that than a man at home?
Strange..... You can either spend a few hours going to hospital waiting around, then they'll drain the blood.
Or you take a deep breath, spend 10 minutes cleaning and preparing at home, then you just do it..

Most definitely minor injuries for drainage and dressing. Not a home DIY job under any circumstances.
