Does this need medical attention? (Yucky photo included)

My DH dropped a tin on his foot at work, he could see a blood blister forming and it was very sore.
He’s just come home and taken his shoe off and it looks like this 🤢

He doesn’t know if he should soak it, dress it, pop it or go to a pharmacist.

Does anyone know what the best thing would be to do?

I wonder if it’s an age thing, or a bringing up thing? That used to be basic home care. Same with a whitlow. Draining boils, splinters, blisters…
Antibiotics were for when something actually began to spread.

I think it’s an upbringing thing for me, I was taken to the doctors once for tonsillitis but other than that, minor ailments etc were just dealt with at home. I broke my arm and my mum took me to the hospital after a week when it was clear I still wasn’t able to use it!
I’m quite cavalier and would definitely have at least started to tackle that toe on my own by popping it to get rid of the pressure/fluid. The nail is unsalvageable, a new one will grow back.
That’s just me though.

Thanks so much for all the advice 💐

He called 111 who have sent him up to minor injuries. Hopefully he won’t be waiting too long.

It was a tin of foam of all things that landed on his foot 😄 A large builders one but still.

He said it wasn’t all that painful this afternoon, just really sore when he first did it.

He’s really squeamish about these things but I found it quite fascinating and kept looking at it desperately trying to avoid the urge to prod it 😄

Ive had half a tonne of horse on my toe multiple times and not had a nail like that.... I am impressed at how disgusting it is 😂😂😂

I'm so surprised by people's answers
It's not infected so he doesn't need antibiotics
He's going to lose the nail and it needs to be pierced to relieve the pressure
No wonder emergency departments are full, why would a nurse in a hospital be better at that than a man at home?
Strange..... You can either spend a few hours going to hospital waiting around, then they'll drain the blood.
Or you take a deep breath, spend 10 minutes cleaning and preparing at home, then you just do it..

I phoned NHS 24 for an injury no where near as bad, they said GP, I couldn't get GP, so saw the practice nurse.

She was I can’t deal with that I'll get a Doc.
Doc was I can’t deal with that don't have the tools.
A&E wanted it xrayed before they'd release the pressure or it could become an open fracture.

So yes 100% right to go to get an expert to deal with it.

I’m a nurse, me and my late DH used to fall out as he loved his medieval remedies. I used to find tubes and jars of ointment that he’d had open for years. He got quite upset when I found something and binned it.

If that had been his toe he would have been in there with god knows what implements, given the chance! I spent years trying to educate him about aseptic techniques. Bless him, he was a one off.

liveforsummer · 17/02/2026 21:46

I know the correct answer is minor injuries but there is no way I’d have been able to resist popping that 😆

As a dedicated reader of Sporner's Corner, approving the photos on this thread has been a delight...

Hope your DH is on the mend soon @BlindGuyMcSqueezy Flowers

This cracked me up 😂 funniest thread ive read in a long time

Dollymylove · 17/02/2026 22:04

This thread is hilarious - OP I hope your husband's foot is ok and he gets seen soon.

The DIY advice is hilarious 😆

"Ok, do you have a black and decker work bench?- ok, lift his leg gently up and secure his foot on the bench using a vice. Should be tight enough that he can't get out of it even if he wants to, but not so much that his shin turns purple. Now, take a bow and arrow (any typical archery set will do) and stand approx 5 metres away from the foot. Dip the arrow in vodka to make it sterile and make sure you are facing south as that has the best light. Aim for just below the nail about 1 cm to the right hand side then steady your hand and shoot. Once the arrow has pierced his foot the blood should start coming out (possibly quite forcefully). Thats when you can stick an Elastoplast on it and let him drink the rest of the vodka (if he hasn't passed out already)."

You forgot setting fire to the vodka tipped arrowhead to sterilise it. Basic first aid.

We definitely used the gas ring to heat up the paper clip to burn through the nail, when the pressure was under the nail. I wouldn’t have with this one because it didn’t need it- the blister at the side would be enough.

Of all the batshit medical advice I’ve seen on here, ‘use a drill bit’ is the new winner.

I've done it with a hammer on thumb injury, using an 0.8mm PCB drill. Instant pain relief.

You won't be walking anywhere after doing that

Maybe the 'hobble in' clinic?

So you’d just squeeze the blister? When pray tell did it start to look better? And not infected

I can just see the nurses faces when seeing this. Le sigh.

RandomUserName96 · 17/02/2026 22:14

Definitely, Definitely needs trephination, go to your local minor injuries or A&E.

Hopefully they have the little tool that gets white hot and burns through the nail like we had at the A&E i worked at, rather than a wide bore manual needle like I had used on me when my finger nail needed it

No squeezing, it’s pressured enough. Just give the fluid a way out. And keep it clean, which is quite hard, with toes.

ThroughTheRedDoor · 17/02/2026 22:22

Its like a bloody toe bollock.

Wellshellsbells · 17/02/2026 22:25

Ah be the Lord Jaysus!!!!!

DramaAndBullshit · 17/02/2026 22:26

Wow, I’m amazed it hasn’t popped by itself, that’s huge! The staff in A&E are going to have fun with that.

wobblyweewoman · 17/02/2026 18:34

Is it painful?
Does he have tools and a steady hand?
Take a small drill bit, clean it, and screw it into the nail. After that dress it tightly until he feels the pain change in a few days then the nail will come off, don't throw it away because you can use it as a cover to stop the air getting on, just clean the nail bed and the nail, then put it back and wrap it tightly again.

What the hell

BlindGuyMcSqueezy · 17/02/2026 22:30

Thanks for all of your comments, it’s been very funny to read through them all 😄

Unfortunately DH is still waiting to be seen. He’s been told they’re going to drain it but he’s still waiting patiently. I told him to take photos when it’s being drained but he told me not to be so gross 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Ihateboris your photos have certainly made me see that getting it looked at was the right thing to do! You poor thing it must’ve been so painful.

I have also passed on the compliments about his feet, he’s very chuffed 😄

I think its an age thing. My (now elderly) Dad once removed a wart on his hand by ripping out with pliers. My brothers gangleon was treated at home by whacking it with a copy of The Chronicals of Narnia, and when ive broken my little toe (more than once) ive just splinted it to the other toe myself. I need an impacted wisdom tooth taking out, which recently cracked and broke. I was telling the dentist how it was a shame only the middle bit came out, otherwise i could have had enough wiggle room to take the needle nose pliers to it and save a trip to hospital. Her facecwas so horrified I had to tell her I was joking (I wasn't).

Yeah and in a couple of days enjoy a nice case of sepsis!

Thank you and yes,
It was actually a Thai green curry I made from scratch, luckily I consumed most but my phone was broadcasting to my TV whilst scrolling and the photo filled my 52"

Edited

Nothing would put me off a homemade Thai green curry

chipsticksmammy · 17/02/2026 22:42

My in laws would be slapping some hallowed Savlon cure all on that.

The tube went out of date in 2001 but it’s still used for all things medical 😂

Really? You've suggested using a domestic drill to drill into the nail and you're surprised by the responses. Okay.

Maybe he needs to wear steel toe capped boots for work!

Especially as he seems to be a builder!
