Does this need medical attention? (Yucky photo included)

My DH dropped a tin on his foot at work, he could see a blood blister forming and it was very sore.
He’s just come home and taken his shoe off and it looks like this 🤢

He doesn’t know if he should soak it, dress it, pop it or go to a pharmacist.

Does anyone know what the best thing would be to do?

Heat a paper clip and touch it on the nail until it makes a hole. It’ll release the blood. I wouldn’t go to the walk in.

I'm so surprised by people's answers
It's not infected so he doesn't need antibiotics
He's going to lose the nail and it needs to be pierced to relieve the pressure
No wonder emergency departments are full, why would a nurse in a hospital be better at that than a man at home?
Strange..... You can either spend a few hours going to hospital waiting around, then they'll drain the blood.
Or you take a deep breath, spend 10 minutes cleaning and preparing at home, then you just do it..

it will definitely need antibiotics once they've followed your diy plan. (FWIW i'm a doctor and pretty bold with the home remedies but your advice is terrible!)

He needs to go to minor injuries and have that x-rayed as it’s his big toe and if broken could be at risk of osteomyelitis.

Blimey, what was in the tin?? 😂

Im an equestrian so I’m afraid I’d just try and poke a hole in it myself to drain the blood (we are very quick to call vets when horses need them, but tend to deal with our own ailments and injuries in a more DIY fashion!)

Whatever he chooses to do, can you photograph the process? Would love to see it!

Headologist · 17/02/2026 19:25

100% minor injuries. And I hope he's taking pain relief, my eyes are watering just looking at that.

Please don't attempt either of the mad DIY fixes suggested here, that's how you end up with a much more complicated injury/ infection.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 17/02/2026 19:26

Definitely minor injuries or GP tomorrow
Following any of these weird suggestions like poking it with a paperclip will lead to a larger waste of resources when it gets horribly infected

BlindGuyMcSqueezy · 17/02/2026 19:40

Thanks so much for all the advice 💐

He called 111 who have sent him up to minor injuries. Hopefully he won’t be waiting too long.

It was a tin of foam of all things that landed on his foot 😄 A large builders one but still.

He said it wasn’t all that painful this afternoon, just really sore when he first did it.

He’s really squeamish about these things but I found it quite fascinating and kept looking at it desperately trying to avoid the urge to prod it 😄

You won't be walking anywhere after doing that

Franjipanl8r · 17/02/2026 19:57

Maybe he needs to wear steel toe capped boots for work!

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 17/02/2026 19:57

I wonder if it’s an age thing, or a bringing up thing? That used to be basic home care. Same with a whitlow. Draining boils, splinters, blisters…
Antibiotics were for when something actually began to spread.

Ihateboris · 17/02/2026 20:04

I had something similar which I ignored...would you like to see a photo of how it ended up??

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 17/02/2026 20:08

Yes!

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 17/02/2026 20:15

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, go to Minor Injuries. Despite Doctor Crippen's DIY advice upthread, you should see an actual professional.

This is from dropping something on his foot from today? It looks more like the nail has gradually risen to change colour so much, like a bruise, plus the dark blister underneath.

A fresh wound tends to be a brighter red, toe nail would be the same colour and attached to base injury.

You're having a larf

Beamur · 17/02/2026 20:20

That gross! Definitely needs looking at. If it's broken he'll need to take antibiotics when they drain it.
He will lose that toenail too.

As a dedicated reader of Sporner's Corner, approving the photos on this thread has been a delight...

Hope your DH is on the mend soon @BlindGuyMcSqueezy Flowers

This sounds like a bad idea.

🤌 perfect understatement😂

GrizeldaMcBain · 17/02/2026 20:23

Make sure he films whatever they do at minor injuries to drain it. I love this stuff.

WhosMadeline · 17/02/2026 20:27

How did it end up like that @ihateboris? Was it from popping it yourself?

Hope it’s ok now??

I can't see a photo.

You'll thank Mumsnet later.

Yuck.

Gp appointment unless there's red creeping up the leg.

You can ask NHS 111 if you prefer a more medical opinion.

PragmaticIsh · 17/02/2026 20:28
