He died yesterday and was 95 so he had a long life but for me he was one of the all time great actors, an actor’s actor and he stole the show for me in The Godfather as Tom Hagen.

He died yesterday and I lost a friend yesterday too. RIP to both men.

Yes it feels like there’s very few true greats left now.

I’ll have to make a point of watching the movies of his that I haven’t yet seen. He had such an incredible body of work though he was always worth watching regardless of the quality of the film.

Absolutely loved him as Tom Hagen

I’m still so pissed off that we didn’t get to see him in Part 3 but he was incredible as Tom Hagen in 1 and 2. He never hit a wrong note there.

He was great in the 90s film ..Colours about LA gang warfare.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/02/2026 18:48

@FriendsOnline I recently read Al Pacino’s autobiography. He said the Part III script was heavily about Tom Hagen but Robert Duvall chose not to participate and so they had to change everything. Shame

It was a shame but that was apparently because Paramount wouldn’t pay him enough, he didn’t want as much as Pacino but he wanted to be paid fairly and they refused. I don’t blame Duvall there but having listened to a six hour podcast of the possible storylines for part 3 the resulting film, with any of the possibilities, would have been 100x better with Tom Hagen in it. His relationship with Michael was so essential to the films.

Aw, Boo Radley. Great age though

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/02/2026 19:17

@FriendsOnline intrigued by your podcast. Totally agree he should have been paid equitably. I was gutted the first time I watched Part Three and realised he wasn’t in it.

An incredible long life, so very well lived 🥰

LaurieFairyCake · 16/02/2026 19:42

De Niro and Pacino will go soon, and they are incredible too. In fact De Niros series last year was amazing, can’t believe he’s still so good at mid 80’s!

Thanks for the recommendation. I haven’t seen that and I must add it to my watchlist.

Lonesome Dove

I’m going to have to watch that again. He and TLJ were so perfect for those roles. Apparently they were originally supposed to play the other’s part but I really can’t imagine anyone else as Gus.

He loved the smell of Napalm in the morning. He played the surfing Cavalry officer in Apocalypse Now.

I just watched his short scenes again as Boo. He had so little to work with, so little time to do it in and yet he did so much. I think that it’s a true test of an actor when you can make such an impact with mere moments like that.

It’s frustrating to imagine how much better the third part would have been with Tom in it.

I can’t recall which podcast it was right now. I listened to it last year when I went through a spate of The Godfather podcasts but I’ll add the link if I find it again.

I thought he asked for too much money?

Absolutely LOVED him as Tom Hagan. After Sonny's death he was my absolutely favourite character.

He was so good in that and though the remake was great, personally I still preferred the original.

It’s crazy how iconic that character is. He was in the movie for such a short time yet he’s one of the most memorable parts of it in a movie full of them and full of great actors.
