Bin lid banging on wall…

I’ve just bought a new pedal bin for the kitchen but when you open the lid with the pedal, it opens with such force that it bangs against the wall. Even when I move it an inch or so from the wall it still does it - the lid goes further open that you’d expect it to. Any ideas for something to stop the banging that wouldn’t look stupid or have other issues? My first thought was sticking a foam strip along the front of the lid but that will stop it being so easy to clean. Sticking on the wall could look a bit daft. Any other ideas i’m missing?

Move the bin further away

Flowertrees · 16/02/2026 07:55

As I’ve said if I move it slightly it still does it. If I move it far enough so that it doesn’t bang the wall, it’s way too far from the wall and there’s a big gap which looks stupid. It sounds so odd, it honestly, the lis opens way further than you’d expect, it’s not vertical when it’s opened, it goes much further so it would have to be about 6 inches away from the wall. Such a bad bin design

I would find that exceedingly annoying. Is it a bin that’s designed to be placed against a wall? If so I’d return it on the basis that it’s not fit for purpose

Okay - how about turning the bin sideways?

Failing that - get a different bin....

We have a swing top one in the kitchen, so avoid the lid-banging scenario completely.

You might both be right. I was hoping someone would come along with a magic answer, or telling me how to stop it opening so far but I think that’s too technical.

Put something underneath the pedal so you can only press it so far and therefore only open the lid so far?

What about one of those sticky pad things on the top so when it hits the wall it doens't bang?

On a bin I can see it getting dirty quite fast, but they're cheap and quick to replace

Ah, this might be exactly the comment I was looking for!! I’ll try that thank you!

That clanging noise is so irritating, I've got rid of bins in the past for this very reason.

I know you said foam on the wall would look daft, but what about a clear, self-adhesive silicone pad? I used sticky dots to damp the noise of internal doors slamming.

AnchorWHAT · 16/02/2026 10:16

Same problem for me was solved by buying a clear sticky pad designed to go on a wall behind a door handle to stop marks.

Put something into the hinge (start with a bit of card) and experiment from there. It shouldn’t need to show when it’s closed.

AuDHDqueen · 16/02/2026 10:22

Put an elastic band around the pole mechanism at the back, three quarters of the way up, to prevent it opening fully

Thanks for all the ideas!
