Miss the cinema but it feels too extravagant to go now

Anyone else? I used to go to the cinema a lot. But having to watch the budget and it's just so much. Such a shame really.

I'm not a big fan myself, but, if you have the time to go regularly, then a monthly pass can be really good value.

Beekman · 13/02/2026 21:47

A monthly pass could be your friend, OP.

Everything has gone up in price. I still think the cinema is great value -what else can you do for that price?

caringcarer · 13/02/2026 21:48

Do the meercats 2 for 1 deal.

Agree.

Heyhelga · 13/02/2026 21:49

Honestly can't remember the last time I went to the cinema. Probably for some kids half term film four or five years ago now. I think in the streaming age I just much prefer to watch a film in peace in my own home than be surrounded by strangers chatting amongst themselves, mobile phone out etc.

TwattingDog · 13/02/2026 21:49

Tickets can be inexpensive, depends on where you want to go and how often.

Take your own snacks and drinks - it's permitted.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 13/02/2026 21:51

If you’re with O2 then you can get 2 Vue tickets for £9 plus 20% off food which is a great deal.

I personally don’t think it’s that expensive compared to other activities that you do for a similar amount of time, 2-3 hours. The bounce zone that my dc love costs nearly £30 for the 2 of them for an hour!

paddleboardingmum · 13/02/2026 21:53

Thanks for these tips, I'm not with O2 or meerkat but will look into those.

OP posts:
paddleboardingmum · 13/02/2026 21:54

That's a LOT for the bounce zone @Tacocatgoatcheesepizza !

Have you got a Vue near you? They often have offers for quieter periods and they have 'saver seats' if you don't mind a less than ideal vantage point.

Denim4ever · 13/02/2026 21:59

DS is a big cinema goer. Has memberships etc. He's 20.

When he's home, we sometimes go with him. DS and I more often go to concerts and theatre. Generally that's more expensive than cinema

caringcarer · 13/02/2026 22:00

We do house insurance through meercats website. They find you a good price on insurance and you get meercats benefits cinema and coffees.

pizzaHeart · 13/02/2026 22:03

Follow Cineworld or Vue (or whatever is near you) on FB they often have deals or special days.
Also check Tesco Club card vouchers, tickets are cheaper with them at Cineworld atm.

MiceAreNice · 13/02/2026 22:05

I'm off to see a film at the Imax - £25 a ticket!! But I really love cinema and seeing a special film on the biiiig screen is cheaper than other kinds of nights out involving lots of alcohol.
Just need to bring your own snacks!

Fishchipspeascupoftea · 13/02/2026 22:18

Have you got an independent cinema? Ours is £5 all tickets any time. You do sometimes have to wait to see a film as they only have two screens but worth it.

Fbfbfvfvv · 13/02/2026 22:28

Whenever I’ve been to the cinema in the passed year people have loudly talked over the film and behaved in a generally antisocial way. Our local cinema also now has started bag searching everyone so that there is zero tolerance in taking snacks or drinks in - and the snacks are so expensive to purchase in the cinema. So I’ve stopped going, it’s not worth it at all.

Plinketyplonks · 13/02/2026 22:38

I hardly ever go but going tomorrow, three kids and one adult £39. I looked for deals but it was alll Mon-Thurs etc and the Vue (where I could have got discounted tickets via the O2app) is much further than the Odeon.

I was thinking about the expense because I watched the BBC’s a House through Time with the historian David Olusoga, and in the latest series he looks at the occupants of a large mansion block of flats in Baker Street and one of the residents was the Bernstein family who built cinemas in the 1920s and 1930s etc. it really was a time or entertainment for the masses, it cost pennies to see a film and people went several times a week!

Scoffingbiscuits · 13/02/2026 23:00

How much are you paying? The cinemas around us are really struggling and tickets are cheap - often £6.

Leafywool · 13/02/2026 23:25

My DH did a very cheap days travel insurance through meerkat (i think it cost him something stupid like £2!) to get the 2 for 1 for a year, which I think is worth doing for the saving.

popcornandpotatoes · 13/02/2026 23:30

My nearest vue, which is nice with luxury seats, is £7.99. I really don't think that is extravagant

Namechangerage · 13/02/2026 23:31

Get yourself on o2 priority and get 2 vue tickets for £9?

Bsmirched · 13/02/2026 23:32

If you know anyone on Three, there are almost always £4 tickets on their 3+ app.

Lifejigsaw · 13/02/2026 23:32

If you’re on octopus it’s 2 for £8. Actually a lot of deals out there if you’re not looking for Saturday night tickets bought on the day

Snootsnoot · 13/02/2026 23:35

We only have a Curzon and I find their website hard to find anything appropriate - dd is 14 and nothing seems to have a certification, which means I need to create a seperate tab and google every sodding film that happens to be on at my venue, then watch the trailer to see if it is appropriate or interesting. After 7 I usually give up. They always come out on Netflix about 2 weeks later anyway.

underseige05 · 13/02/2026 23:47

Do you have sky movies as we get 2 free tickets a month at Vue.
I often give them away to friends if there's nothing we fancy that month. Maybe worth asking your friends and family
