Do you have, or know another woman, with a very sweet voice?

There’s a certain type of very sweet voice that I’ve noticed a few times in American women who are either Christian Fundamentalist, or what for want of a better description, male centred in their views. The women in the Warren Jeff’s cult were the most extreme example.

I’ve never met a woman irl who speaks in that pitch, including women from all over Europe, South Africa, Australia, Russia, etc. Nor do any of my American friends talk like that.

Is it a dialect? Is it trained? I can’t even imitate it properly, and I don’t think I could keep it up even if I could, it must be exhausting if it’s put on. And why? Do men like squeaky saccharine voices?

A couple of UK based influencers have very squeaky girly voices.

JumpingPumpkin · 13/02/2026 19:12

I knew a woman years ago who sounded like a little girl, I also heard one on the train last week, got a total shock that the group behind me were all mature adults when they stood up.

Coffeeishot · 13/02/2026 19:13

I think it is practised "feminity isn't it, simpering to appear lady like to appease men. I don't know who teaches it. I don't know anybody who speaks like it.

Linguist1979 · 13/02/2026 19:14

There’s one in my sewing class. It has ti be fake. I want to pinch her and tell her to talk properly.

Dearg · 13/02/2026 19:15

No, it’s fake. I lived in Texas. Real women don’t squeak.

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 13/02/2026 19:16

In Japan many women do it, apparently it is considered polite. They speak in a more normal pitched voice when speaking in English so the 'sweet' high breathy childish tone is definitely put on. Weirds me out as well.

Coffeeishot · 13/02/2026 19:17

I remember i used to watch the Duggar programme, and the mum had this irritating baby voice, I thought that can't be her actual voice.

Luxlumos · 13/02/2026 19:20

It gives me the heebie jeebies.

Which ones are you thinking of @PeacockPalace ?

No. I'm Northern. All the women I know, including myself, have got a voice like a shrieking fishwife. I'd love to have soft, modulated tones.

Katie Ellison and SJ Strum are the ones I had in mind but I’m pretty sure I’ve heard others with squeaky voices too

Luxlumos · 13/02/2026 19:32

Katie Ellison sounds (to my ear anyway) squeaky but natural. The ones I’m thinking of are very sugary and baby like. SJ Strum is more like that. She’s young enough to carry it off though. I find it really odd on more mature women.

God yes, years ago at uni we had a tutor who was like this, it gave me the absolute rage. As she was my counselling and psychology tutor I actually brought it up with her during one of our sessions, "oh, I don't know what you mean". FUCK OFF BETTY!!!!! Argh.

I like to pretend i have a soft scottish lilt, when the reality is "fish wife"

Getthetea · 13/02/2026 19:38

So fake. Can’t stand it myself.

Egglio · 13/02/2026 19:42

The Philadelphia Cheese girl voice?

StudyinBlue · 13/02/2026 19:46

It’s definitely not ‘sweet’. It gives me the rage and makes me want to slap them hard and tell them to grow up. I definitely think its affected to makes them sound ‘sweet’ 🤮, ‘girly’ and helpless. I hear American’s often describe women as ‘soft spoken’ as if it’s a good thing and it always makes them sound so wet.

Goldenbear · 13/02/2026 19:49

It depends, Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star had quite a young voice when being interviewed, certainty wouldn't associate her with dull Trad wife self censorship! Some women do have naturally higher pitched voices.

samantha9 · 13/02/2026 19:49

I absolutely loathe this too! Women speaking in little girl voices, I always want to tell them to speak properly and use your whole voice!

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 13/02/2026 19:52

Is it not a cultural thing like the camp male voice, or vocal fry? No one ever seems to comment on camp voices.

Hodgemollar · 13/02/2026 19:52

It is purposeful and trained in those religions.

Ophy83 · 13/02/2026 19:53

My friend's mum did this. Even as a child it grated on me. One time she broke character and really had a go at my friend in what I assume was her normal voice even though friend hadn't done anything wrong. I never trusted her after that

rainforestalliance · 13/02/2026 19:54

First person who comes to mind is Gypsy Rose

CurlsandCurves · 13/02/2026 19:55

I used to work in a call centre with a woman who naturally had a very high, childlike voice. It was funny to listen when she was dealing with someone who clearly thought she was just some little girlie who didn’t know what she was talking about. If they tried to walk all over her they had a nasty shock, she took no shit!
