Tell me your lifestyle creeps

NOT a goady thread - meant as lighthearted fun!
If you earn well now tell me what your lifestyle creeps are? Those nice little extras that you yourself might have rolled your eyes at or have never entertained previously! Even better if you tell us the ones that aren’t worth it!

mine below:

Marks and Spencer for the food shop
Fancy makeup brands - not sure these are value for the money but I’m a SUCKER for the packaging!
Cashmere or silk socks - WORTH it!
High thread count bedding
Expensive skin care - genuinely think has made a difference 🤞

Monthly massages
Clinique skin care and make up
Not budgeting on my food shop

OtherS · 13/02/2026 18:23

Business class flights.
High end skincare.
Butcher meat.

All very much worth it and really couldn't go back.

A bigger house. Doubled the mortgage.

1-1 singing lessons. I always wanted to learn to sing and now spend £80pm on lessons.

Branded clothes and handbags. I have several Ralph Lauren dresses because I bought one for a special occasion, loved the cut and fit so bought it in different prints. A mulberry handbag which is understated and goes with absolutely everything.

Oooh how interesting. Can I ask a question? Can anyone learn to sing? I’m still dragging around baggage from singing when young and family telling me I was ‘tone deaf’. I would so love to learn how to sing a couple of songs in tune

I disagree about the expensive skin care as the best moisturiser I’ve ever had is the Aveeno gel one which costs less than £10. That said, I do spend a bit more on serums though even then I use Korean brands which are generally under £30 for a serum. I’ll be 50 soon and most people are shocked when I tell them that.

I have a cleaner once a week and that is a real luxury.

treeowl · 13/02/2026 18:52

Just thought of mine, staying part time.

My fortunes have fluctuated wildly over the years, & now I'm "comfortable" I've still got the mindset to be frugal.

I think M&S food is over-rated & over-priced; I buy some things from Aldi.
Mulberry handbags look nice, but their fastenings are insecure.
I'm too old for expensive face care to make a difference.

I'm a life-long , old-fashioned Socialist, however...
Private dentistry is good, my new GP practice is crap so I can now go private.

I've moved to a bigger, nicer home.
Far-flung holidays (Premium Economy as a minimum) are a regular feature.

Our house - it’s a draughty money pit that needs completely renovating with an equally demanding garden. I love it.
Hobbies - DD has a pony, I ride regularly and also do reformer Pilates weekly. DH spends a fortune on cricket, golf and guitars.
Private education - I’d give up the house and the hobbies to keep DD in her school, she’s gone from borderline school refuser to bouncing in every day. Worth every penny.

Yes, anyone can learn to sing. It's an instrument that you learn to play. No one would be expected to play the flute without learning how to. The voice is exactly the same.

G5000 · 13/02/2026 19:34

first it was supermarket shop without adding up the shopping and calculating if I have enough money on my bank account before payday.

Now it's supermarket shop without looking at prices.

Considering booking hostels instead of sleeping on airport bench when I had booked the cheapest flights with some crazy layovers.
Then booking flights based on convenience and not just whatever was cheapest.

Hodgemollar · 13/02/2026 19:36

Marks and Spencer’s for treats/ weekend food/ instead of a takeaway. When my DH and I first moved in together we budgeted £25 for food for the week including lunch and we could not ever go over, now we don’t ever keep track of the food shops through the month.

Botox

Makeup I’ve actually spent less on as I’ve moved into my 30s, less impulse purchases and a few mid range products that work and I use until they’re done.

Used to browse hotels by price low to high now I generally start high to low and compare details to make sure it suits what we enjoy.

I used to do my own highlights once or twice in between salon appointments but with two young kids and minimal child free time I just can’t be arsed now so that’s become more costly which I now can’t really cut as the greys are getting more pronounced.

I guess a big house has become a lifestyle creep, it now feels like we couldn’t be in anything smaller than a generous 5 bed even though on the surface it might not appear necessary with only 2 kids.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 13/02/2026 19:49

Cleaner!

nice hotels. And the nicest room / suite I can afford. Upgrading flights and trains whenever possible.

Botox twice a year, monthly manicure, highlights and cut every three months

regular massage and acupuncture. Was sooooo sceptical about the latter but I can literally feel the benefits to my sleep and nervous system it’s amazing

i haven’t changed weight / shape since my late teens so have built a great wardrobe over decades, only needs a few tweaks each year at this stage.

singthing · 13/02/2026 19:51

I pay extra for the fancy station parking which means a closer, guaranteed spot.
First class long haul flights and nice hotels.
I have a weekly cleaner.

That's about it really, I otherwise naturally tend to frugal and low-maintenance.

Junaluma · 13/02/2026 19:54

Where do I start…

  • Business/first class flights (usually on points!)
  • luxury hotels, I only stay at Premier Inn/Travelodge for one night
  • 4x4 car
  • shutters
  • buying bread from Gail’s/food shop at Waitrose (especially Mutti tomatoes!)
  • expensive gym membership
eventhekitchensink · 13/02/2026 20:06

High end skincare
Good quality vitamin supplements
Coffee shop coffee

MissingSockDetective · 13/02/2026 20:10

I don't think I have anything specific as I'm a bit of a natural saver, however I do think I have to consider purchases far less than I used to. There's a lot of things I can afford but choose not to bother with, like business class flights or enormous cars. Perhaps I also spend a little more on things like furniture when I feel it needs replacing.

ERthree · 13/02/2026 20:11

Retirement on my 40s. First class trains and flights although i still use the bus in town and our car is ancient. As my husband rears, hunts, catches or trades all of our meat and fish and i grow most of the veg i shop for fruit and other bits in M&S. Not having to check prices is great but i am a typical wee Scottish granny that won't be ripped off.

This is interesting and shows how we’re all unique in where we splurge. Neither is right or wrong.

I love my food and mentioned shopping in Waitrose (rather than m&s) before seeing your post. We buy our meat from there (or the butchers) and our fruit/veg as we can taste the difference. Aside from the quality, I’m not overwhelmed by choice.

I agree with the private dentist as we don’t have another choice and I knew I was fortunate to opt for private healthcare for my DD rather than the extended NHS wait lists.

Yet at the same time, whilst I love travel, sometimes it is where I find a bargain flight. A £50 return flight on Ryanair is usually a strong contender (especially if it’s Italy!)

popcornandpotatoes · 13/02/2026 20:21

Still shop at Tesco but I admit I 'pop in' to m&s several times a week

Hepzibar · 13/02/2026 20:22

Having driven bangers for years don’t take changing my car every two years.
a collection of Mulberry’s
food shop at M&S
like the poster up thread - paying for my adult children and grandchildren when we go out had made me immeasurably happy
helping my youngest (son) me and him had a tough time when ex H left
nice hotels
3/4 holidays a year
luxury hair care
worked hard for this and still do

ChipsandCheesewithGravy · 13/02/2026 20:22

I grew up in financial insecurity heating wasn't an absolute given food necessary and not much else clothes hand me downs. The best financial creep I've had is I'm not cold my DD might insist on throwing her duvet off in the night and isn't cold ... I can have whatever food I want so can my DD and we buy clothes we like rather than wear what is being handed down we do have friends who give us their old stuff and it's very greatfully received but if (for example) we need a blue cardigan a blue cardigan is what we get.

Onelittledog · 13/02/2026 20:32

The best hand cream I can afford
Lovely soap
Luxury candles
High thread count bedding
Quality meat from a good butcher
Gorgeous pyjamas

Marylou2 · 13/02/2026 20:34

University for DD. I want her to be able to take up every opportunity possible within reason after she worked so hard to get into such an incredible uni.
Mounjaro- finally slim- will never give this up
Yoga classes twice a week
Cleaner and gardener every 2 weeks
Natural fibres for clothing and bedding where possible. Fewer purchases but better.
Free range eggs and meat.
Grateful for all of the above.
