Has anyone got a metal bed frame?

DD is after a new bed, and I'm looking at a metal day bed with trundle.

I've never had a metal bed frame, are they noisy / squeaky? She's only 9 so no boyfriend activity to worry about of course! Are they more or less comfortable than a wooden bed / divan?

Any thoughts appreciated.

I considered getting one because I think some look lovely but it was the possibility of squeaking that changed my mind.

Songlines · 12/02/2026 19:25

I have one. It's beautiful and definitely squeak free😀

I have an ikea one but it has wooden slats for the mattress. No squeaks here!

I would like to spray it a different colour though, it might have been easier to paint a wooden one 🤷‍♀️.

Then I’m jealous of your lovely bed! 😁

@Duckingpondlake

We have one…..but if you want to sit up and read in bed/have a cup of tea, then it’s really uncomfortable for your back unless you have a few big bouncy pillows.

I have a metal day bed and it is squeaky. But tbf it's only recently started squeeking and has been used everyday for about 10 yrs!

MamaBobo · 12/02/2026 19:31

Based on past experience and the current beds we have in our guest rooms I’d go for a metal frame without hesitation (we have 2 Kingsize Ikea Ramnefjall at the moment). They do have wooden sprung slats and that means that they are very comfortable and supportive. Previously we had a bed that had a sort of metal mesh support for the mattress to go on and that wasn’t quite as comfortable. Never noticed any squeaky noises!

You could try WD40, it stops my doors creaking.

MiddleAgedDread · 12/02/2026 19:32

I’ve never owned one but slept in them elsewhere and they always squeak and creak.

gototogo · 12/02/2026 19:33

I have, wooden slats though, no not noisy Blush

99pwithaflake · 12/02/2026 19:34

We have one and it's not noisy.

Appletree56 · 12/02/2026 19:38

If it's for a child just need to be conscious that if they stand/jump on the mattress you can risk breaking the slats underneath. Learnt from bitter experience

This! I've had mine for years and it looks lovely, but sitting up is definitely uncomfortable.

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/02/2026 19:41

I have one and love it. Defo not noisy or squeaky. They look fab, I would recommend.

KitchenQuestion · 12/02/2026 19:42

My son has a metal bed frame and it doesn’t squeak at all. It’s really sturdy so doesn’t move around either.

PURPLErainiswhatmadePrincegreat · 12/02/2026 19:43

i got one because my previous one broke after years of someone jumping on it , not realising they have grown to my height and weight and one night I just felt noise and cracks and fell in the middle of the bed, LOL. So now bought a metal frame without a head board. Very simple. Sturdy, nobody can jump on it and it does not squeak. Even if it did.

PURPLErainiswhatmadePrincegreat · 12/02/2026 19:45

it is white, painted and very very handy - loads of space under it to shove old books, other rubbish etc

ERthree · 12/02/2026 19:47

cant link but bout this from Amazon, doesnt make a noise and it doesn't have wooden slats or plastic slat fixings. Very solid.
Yaheetech single 3ft bed frame vintage iron . Depending on colour it is aprox £50. My DH is fussy when it comes to the engineering of things and he is really pleased with this,

Beekman · 12/02/2026 19:50

Yes we have one and it doesn’t make a sound, it’s very sturdy. We bought it from the mattress shop, the people who delivered it put it together, and we attached a headboard ourselves. I wouldn’t have any other kind of bed frame now. I actively despise box springs.

ChristmasFluff · 12/02/2026 19:56

I have a metal bed and it definitely doesn't squeak. Assembled it myself.

Duckingpondlake · 12/02/2026 21:46

Thanks so much for all the feedback, I think I'll go ahead and get one

Don’t get one from Argos. I have a super king and it creaks when I get in and can squeak when adjusting position. - I should have trusted the reviews.
Otherwise, the pluses are easy to clean underneath, easy to move (decorating) and easy to use those storage bags beneath for clothes/linens etc, and airs out really quickly.

BellaBlister · 13/02/2026 15:12

Yes we've got a super king metal frame and after 8 years its just started to make noises. It is also painful to sit up without a lot of pillows, but I still love it.

catera · 13/02/2026 15:14

Mine doesn’t make a sound. New one arriving today after 22 years! I bought from the original bed company and they say it shouldn’t squeak at all

tuvamoodyson · 13/02/2026 15:42

I’ve got a metal bed I’ve had for years from Feather & Black….entirely noise free!
