Is it safe to bath a new puppy daily?

BIL and partner got a new puppy (10 weeks old) and it turns out his partner doesn’t like the dog smell so she is bathing the puppy daily. Is this ok ? I said to her I’m not sure it’s recommended? She said she’s using a gentle shampoo and it’s fine.

No it's not.

Medstudent12 · 09/02/2026 17:52

No that sounds terrible and bad for their skin.

Serafee · 09/02/2026 17:53

Of course not.

Puppy will end up with dry, itchy skin and constantly scratching

i said this and she said it’s fine , also I think it’s scaring the puppy as he’s always shivering during and after I said he needs to settle in as it’s a big change for him and bathing is just going to be scary and stressful

No Hmm
I’d be concerned about the safety of a dog in the hands of someone who “didn’t like the smell of dogs”, to be brutally honest.

Arlanymor · 09/02/2026 17:54

No absolutely not and very weird that before getting a puppy the partner wouldn't have spent enough time around dogs to know she doesn't like the smell! Horrible for the puppy's skin as it's taking the natural oils out of their coat. Why oh why do people not do proper research before they own pets? Drives me mad. There are lots of things you can google online to send the links to your BIL to point out that she's doing the wrong thing for the dog and he is letting her!

FloofyKat · 09/02/2026 17:55

Absolutely not.

Also puppies find it hard to regulate their own temperature - the very earliest you should bathe one is eight weeks so he's only just inside that bracket. That causes shivering too. They just sound like terrible pet owners!

I’m meant to be popping round again on Wednesday so I’ll talk to her again. I didn’t know anything about puppies that’s why I thought I’d check as she kept saying it’s fine it’s gentle shampoo but I knew it didn’t seem a good idea

I’m not sure he knows she’s doing it while he’s at work

I find they smell doggier after a bath! It’s not good for their fur and skin to wash it every day. You can get leave in conditioner for dogs, she could give it a spritz of that. Although I’m unsure why she got one if she doesn’t like the smell of dogs. I certainly wouldn’t want to bath and dry an adult dog every day.

ShawnaMacallister · 09/02/2026 18:03

She's insane. She can't wash the dog smell off the poor beast and of course she's damaging his skin!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 09/02/2026 18:03

It’s cruel, why on earth did they get a dog if they don’t like the smell

Then how do you know about it unless you are there every day? Given he lives with her and it's his puppy too (presumably) then he should know about it. Just talking to idiots doesn't work usually - you need to present her with evidence and there is plenty of it online that says to do the opposite of what she is doing.

MidWayThruJanuary · 09/02/2026 18:04

Where did they get the pup from?

Braindraining · 09/02/2026 18:05

God no, poor little puppy. She’s needs to stop. How on earth did she end up with a dog?

Signalbox · 09/02/2026 18:07

Is the plan to bathe it every day for life?

AcquadiP · 09/02/2026 18:11

A puppy shouldn't be bathed at all, a vet will tell them this. All puppies have a puppy smell which wears off in a couple of months. If a puppy smell is offensive how on earth are they going to cope with the smell of an adult dog, especially a wet adult dog? They are being cruel and really shouldn't have any dog.

unbelievablybelievable · 09/02/2026 18:13

Stress/anxiety can make them give off the doggy smell. Wet dog obviously smells worse than dry dog so I can't imagine daily bathing is good. How does she dry the puppy? Towels really aren't effective. But hairdryer will cause more stress (and temperature probably isn't good for a small pup).

We have a sometimes smelly dog and the best thing to prevent smells is regular brushing to get rid of old hair. Regular washing of bedding and toys too.

She has been sending messages pictures / videos and told me she has bathed him every day so he smells fresher. She also asked me would I allow a puppy in my bed as they’d had a row as BIL wanted puppy in bed and she has insisted it’s not upstairs at all

Edited

She doesn't actually seem to like dogs all that much...

BIL has always wanted one. She thought they were really cute and didn’t apparently realise they smell !

Sounds like she should have said no to a puppy altogether . If she visits a good groomer she would be able to buy a dog cologne and she could give him a bit of a spritz with that which would definitely be better than keep bathing him/ her .

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 09/02/2026 18:30

No need. There's a big problem here
