Where to move to?

I'm currently unhappy with where I live. I'm lonely and bored and a bit isolated. I'd like to move somewhere busier with more opportunities for a social circle. I am lucky that my work is pretty flexible with where I work from but I will have to travel to London, Oldham and Birmingham occasionally as that is where our offices are.

Ideally I'd like to be in the North East as it's an area I like.

Ideally I would like:
To be within 20 minutes drive of a well serviced train station.
To be in a town or city with plenty to do, shops, cafes, meet up groups etc.
To be within 20 minutes drive of a cinema (I love film).
To be within 20 minutes drive of a nice beach if possible.
To buy a 2-3 bed house for £200k or less.
To be within 20 minutes drive of a swimming pool.

Where do you think suits my needs?

Thanks.

I know you said North East, but Yorkshire (specifically Leeds) ticks a lot of your boxes & the drive to areas in the North East is very doable.

Interesting. I hadn't considered Leeds. York did cross my mind at one point.

Selby is between Leeds & York and has some great villages

I'm not sure about Selby to be honest.

Harrogate

I like Harrogate. Is there enough going on do you think?

Although it may be too far away from a beach and a mainline station.

Cramlington? Has a cinema, swimming pool and train station (only 10 minutes to Newcastle). It's also not far from the beach.

MiddleAgedDread · 07/02/2026 20:10

I’d look around Newcastle

JokerOfTwo · 07/02/2026 20:32

If you like Harrogate and York and want the amenities you listed you’d have to up your budget.

Catchycatchytune · 07/02/2026 20:38

I was going to say York. It’s a lovely place and well connected.

Look at Garforth in Leeds, has a Trainline which serves Leeds city centre, York & Hull. It has a high street with shops, cafes, bars, butchers, grocers etc. Has its own leisure centre, including a pool. 5 minutes to the cinema in the car.

The beach isn’t close obviously, but you can get to the east cost in 1.5 hours: Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Bridlington.

I love Alnwick in Northumbria. It has a pool and a pretty town centre.

I'll wave my magic wand for the money tree to grow.
