Bizarre mattress size

Bought a new mattress a few years ago (Dormeo Octospring). Has been lovely, fairly firm, helped my back, great nights sleep etc etc.

Did notice it was slightly narrower than the bed, but incredibly didn't measure it on arrival - assumed it was ancient secondhand bed frame being a non-standard size. Previous mattress was old and squishy and also secondhand so I assumed that had just squished out to fit.

Today I actually measured it (have been viewing properties to buy and idly pondering bed sizes). It's only 4'3" wide! And 6'1" long! So 3 inches too narrow and 2 inches too short, compared to standard double size.

It's far too late to do anything about it (I assume!) but when I move and get a new bed I will now be getting a proper sized mattress.

But - WTF?! Googling sheds no light on this. Why is it a weird non standard size?

Has anyone had this happen? Does anyone have the same type of mattress? (Because I love it apart from the size so if it's just a freak mistake I will go for the same brand again.)

That's weird! I hope you don't have to share it. Didn't you notice it didn't quite fit on your bed base and your bottom sheets were a bit roomy?

IKEA used to sell some weird sized beds. Perhaps it’s one of those.

TalulahJP · 07/02/2026 11:40

i’d email them and ask! send a photo with an inchtape across it so they can see the full width and finish. so what it’s a few years ago. it does no harm to enquire. maybe it was made to measure for a hotel alcove or somethimg and you got it by mistake?

Does ikea still sell weird ones? I was thinking that too

GreenBananaSmoothie · 07/02/2026 11:44

Ikea beds used to be EU sizes but I think they now sell UK sizes in the UK. I have what they used to market as a "continental king"(!) and its awkward to get sheets for.

Could the mattress be for a three quarter size bed?

StopWindingBobStopWinding · 07/02/2026 11:45

IKEA, annoyingly, doesn’t still sell non-uk sizes in the uk.We bought our bed from them when we moved 13 years ago, and chose a European king size bed frame - bigger than a uk king and smaller than a uk super king. The mattress has been phenomenal and stayed extra firm until now, so we are looking to replace it, but ikea uk now only stocks standard uk sizes. Gutted! So we are having to get a mattress from Europe if we want to keep our current bedframe (which we do as it matches the other furniture in the room).

GreenBananaSmoothie · 07/02/2026 11:48

@stopwindingbobstopwinding we have just replaced our IKEA mattress and found most of the big suppliers sell EU sizes. We went with an Otto which is as solid as our old IKEA one was. Hate a squishy mattress!

That is an excellent recommendation, thank you! I haven’t. Found anything else anywhere near as firm as our Sultan which is why we were looking to Europe. Happy that might not be necessary!

As mentioned, I assumed it was the v old secondhand bed base that was a weird size.

I didn't notice the sheets fitting differently.

It's too large for a three quarter size. Really odd!

European and US sizes are a bit larger so it's not one of them either.

It was definitely sold as a double, because I did double check when I initially noticed it was smaller than the bed frame. Just stupidly didn't actually measure!

Is this not what they call a small double?

shellyleppard · 07/02/2026 15:16

Yep I brought a mattress in lockdown and its the same odd size measurements!!! I have a very old (20 year+ ) bed frame from IKEA..... the new mattress is slightly two short!! Just put an old rollled up duvet in the gap lol

Could be a French bed, the are usually smaller or were ?

Favouritefruits · 07/02/2026 15:19

There was a problem with bed sizes with certain companies while ago, maybe it was one of these but you just didn’t notice. I bought a kids single Jaybee that was affected, I reckon about 5 years ago.
