Cold. Home treatments

I have a nasty cold. Woke with 39 in temperature yesterday and spent the day resting paracetamol and ibuprofen mostly dealt with it. Today. Nose is runny, hoarse voice. ( throat not sore as such more irritated) ear hurts (think sinus pain as often have ear infections and this feels different) tinnitus in ear that hurts, that post fewer muscle ache all over, headache that hurts like nuts if I am not keeping up with pain meds and liquid.

However the worst is the muscle strain in my sides from a rather iregular and not very frequent (but aggressive when I do) COUGH

Are there any home remedies to deal with this please? I am not a cold compress person. I find ice packs outright painfull. I have tried heat and it soothes a bit but not a great deal. I want to sleep badly but suspect I slept a bit to much yesterday as while I am exhausted i cant fall asleep.

Feeling a bit sorry for myself. Dh has been great is regular checking if i need liquids or food. Im just wondering if anyone has a tried and tested remedy to try to deal with this muscle strain. The rest I can cope with but. I am crying out in pain each time I cough and due to this cant cough properly.

When I had costochondritis (which causes similar pain) my GP told me to take codeine. I don't think there's anything external you can use if the pain is that bad, and you've already tried heat and cold.
If you buy over the counter co-codemol, remember to adjust how much paracetamol you take as it contains 500mg pre tablet.

Thank you @Thelnebriati we have got some codeine. From when dh had cellulitis. So I can try that. I had not considered it as something to take as the other two were doing ok. But i last took paracetamol at 5 so that might help. Going to get dh to check the strenght first

I should also have said - codeine acts as a suppressant so its good for coughs! I hope you get a good nights sleep.

Thank you @Thelnebriati isnt it odd how bad a cold can make you feel and how we tend to think of it as minor. (As it is sickness wise) but it really does take it out on you.

Thank you the codeine rrally helpt and I sleptnfor 8 hours solid. I have woken feeling a bit more human. Though with little voice and a nose that is running constantly.

Good news is muscle strain feels much better and earache feels less so sinus was likely able to drain a bit overnight.

Hopefully today is theblast day of feeling too sick to do anything .

I swear by cold remedies for colds or hot honey and lemon. Get some vitamin c and zinc (preferably fizzy kind) and echinacea. Lots of liquids. Bin tissues after each use. You can only take codeine for 3 days.

Check with your doctor in case you have a sinus infection or ear infection as you may need antibiotics.

Turmeric has just helped me get thru a dreadful 2 week cold. Check it is ok for you though as it can affect some prescription meds.

Thank you everyone. The codeine allowed me to sleep and rest the muscle strain. Today I have managed with ibuprofen and lots of liquids. I will likely take codeine again tonight to sleep.

Sadly I am on meds that means no tumeric. But I am using vitamin C and zinc (not the fizzy kind I dont have any)

I dont think its an ear infection. I have had a lot over the years and this doesnt fit the usual. Today having sat upright and declined my nose is almost unblocked and the this reduces the pain hugely in the ear so I am pretty sure its blocked sinuses due to a cold. I will keep an eye on it and seek antibiotics if I think it gets worse.

Ultimately. As the picture shows I am being well cared for by Conkers. I do feel on the mend but this has really floored me
