Does anyone work in a primary school office

Is it a nice job? Do you enjoy it?

I’ve been NHS admin for nearly ten years and I’m fed up and need a change and just spotted a job at my daughter’s old primary school - thinking about applying!

I have done. If you’re super organised, have a great memory and like phone calls you’ll be grand! For me it was tricky as my memory is not what it was and every teacher expects you to prioritise their requests and have the info they asked for earlier to hand the minute they pop their head in the door, despite that you’ll have been answering 101 emails, dealing with sick children and head bumps, firefighting phone calls, chasing up absentees and walking up and down the school several times a day collecting and dropping things off.

If you want something more active and full-on than a general office job (which if you’ve come from NHS I presume you do!) this could be ideal.

It wasn’t for me, but that was because of me, not the job - and of course the job requirements will be different at every school. Some have digital registers the teachers deal with, whereas we were old school (literally!) and had to manually enter the teachers scribbles into the computer for them. Some schools deal with minor bumps and scrapes in the year group, some send to the office or medical room.

Definitely find out more about it as the hours and term time dates are handy if you have kids.

I did that job many years ago and enjoyed it. One downside was not being able to take any holidays in term time

True. My kids are all out of school age now and I hadn’t realised how restrictive that was as I’d been confined to school hols for as long as I remembered. Being free of this and then tying myself into a term time job was a mistake looking back!
