I want to work from home!

Just that really, how does anyone manage it?

Everytime I look for home based jobs, I just get bombarded with MLM or survey sites. It’s a bloody minefield!

I WFH 3 days a week but have been told I could WFH 100% if I want to move closer to my parents. I could PM you

Check the vacancies on your local government website, many are hybrid or home working. Our customer services team work from home full time.

EssieEssie · 06/02/2026 16:53

I make dollhouse miniatures, mostly micro minis which is 1:144th scale, all known as dollhouse for a dollhouse and very popular in the usa where most of my minis end up

i also do other things eg resin jewellery, embroidered sachets and so on and sell craft kits and supplies too.

I've got an etsy shop and a website.

Look up, The Work From Home Hub - UK, on facebook. Lots of WFH jobs listed regularly.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 06/02/2026 17:12

I think a lot of work places will offer WFH op, especially post probation, but maybe not advertise it. I would apply for roles you are interested in and have the skill set for and then try and find out about the company policy. Most people I know with office based jobs in both public and private sector have an element of working from home. Even unofficially. I am on a office based contract but there is no expectation to go into the office and hasn't been for about 10 years. Obviously I meet with my wider team in a regular basis but no compulsory days etc etc.

I work from home FT. It’s definitely possible! I was originally seconded from a clinical veterinary role to an operations administrative role, but my role has unfortunately become redundant - I didn’t want to go back into practice so I was determined to find another WFH role. I did keep my search in the same sector (veterinary) but would have been prepared to change if I hadn’t been successful. I’ve managed to find a new role as a pricing administrator for another corporate veterinary group which I’ll be starting in a few weeks. Both my current role and the new one are completely WFH, 9-5:30 but lots of flexibility with this when needed. It’s the only way I’ve managed to feel like I can have it all job/ good income and being present for my kids. I take them to school everyday and start work as soon as I get home, I get loads of work done during the school day then take a break for school pick up, then leave easy tasks for the end of the day so I can also get dinner ready whilst working so we are ready to eat as soon as I finish. Kids don’t care that I’m still working when they get home (they are year 2 and 3). I honestly love working from home and can’t imagine not doing it anymore.

I would say that not all jobs are the same - I wouldn’t want a WFH job where I had to answer the phone all day. And I did work as a pet insurance claims assessor for a while and did not find this as easy to be flexible with, it was also massively micromanaged.

i would recommend: searching remote jobs on indeed but including the sector you are looking for. The ‘Work from home hub’ on Facebook is great! And then Linked in - follow all the companies you’d be interested in working for. It’s generally big corporations that have their support staff working completely remotely.

good luck x

Local authorities often offer wfh /hybrid so worth a looking at vacancies at councils

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 06/02/2026 18:35

It’s not all great, it’s cold (or expensive) it’s boring having no office chit chat, there’s a temptation to stay in PJs which then feels gross, there’s too many distractions from work and too much work to do anything that’s distracting - I don’t have time to clean the kitchen or do laundry, so I sit working and notice all the mess. it’s tiring not having to do much movement.

There’s so many ways it should be more productive, but I find working from home depressing.

dollyblue01 · 06/02/2026 18:40

I work a combination of home , travelling to sites and one day in the office , pretty much plan my own week and time , I did used to work in an office full time and knew it wasn’t for me, maybe look at jobs where your customer service would fit in

Florin · 06/02/2026 18:43

I work from home doing an admin role for a charity the whole of the charity does and we have no physical office anymore, it’s absolutely brilliant. I would keep an eye out for charity jobs as lots work the same way.

That's really cool. Do you ever post videos of you making the miniatures? That might be popular too.

So hard to find, I’ve managed 2 days in the office and 3 days at home. I love it would rather it was one day in the office but it’s still great for a work/life balance. Good luck , they are out there, took me a good 6 months to get it!

Sofado · 06/02/2026 19:54

Why do you want to wfh? I work from home, as do all staff. It’s fully remote. You need a degree, usually a masters too, and preferably a foreign language. It’s full time only and is shift work, including bank holidays, weekends and evenings. It’s not at all flexible. You work set hours and can’t nip out to pick the kids up from school and then catch up in the evening.

I WFH 3 times a week NHS admin job band 3.

Because I hate the commute. It steals precious time from my day that I could be working but I’m not because I’m driving.

i’ve also worked with very many people that get right on my pip so not being FTF would help me with my lack of brain mouth filter. I’m not rude by any stretch but I do struggle not to tell people they are being arseholes when they are stood in front of me being an arsehole. Many years of being phone based CS has helped with this.

i like the peace and quiet, and i like being at home where I’m comfortable. I work way more effectively when I am comfortable.

Having the discipline to get dressed is important.
Having a designated work space helps, though I appreciate not everyone is fortunate enough to have that.
It sounds like your job isn’t very fulfilling.

For admin roles look at civil servant/ nhs/ government positions, many work from home or hybrid.

Nope most Civil Service roles have to be in an office 60% of the time. Most local Government jobs are hybrid and most NHS staff are on site full time.

I had to leave because it was actually causing me to be physically unwell due to the stress of having the exact same situation at home and at work, hence me looking to go back to what I love rather than what is practical.

i had to take my child to school each day so the getting up, showered and dressed thing isn’t a problem for me x

I’m a senior marketing manager for a large pharmaceutical/health company and I WFH fully. It’s a USA company with UK departments and brands, so we all just WFH as everyone’s all over the world. It’s very flexible too, we can block out school pick up/drop off times in our calanders, and if we work over our time we get to take it back.

There’s quite a few WFH roles in marketing actually, when I was made redundant from my Hybrid marketing role in May last year there were quite a few fully remote ones listed (all on Linkedin), which is how I found my current role.
