I want to work from home!

AutismMum2017 · 06/02/2026 11:30

Just that really, how does anyone manage it?

Everytime I look for home based jobs, I just get bombarded with MLM or survey sites. It’s a bloody minefield!

Generally you need to be established in a job before being able to fully work from home.

A lot of jobs now are hybrid so never fully at home. Ones i’ve seen that are wfh are call centre based.

Sugarrum · 06/02/2026 11:33

Have you previously had a career or an area you want to go into? Rather than just looking for any wfh job, have a look on LinkedIn searching for the job titles you want and wfh. With just general wfh you get a lot of junk vs narrowing down to the role or industry you want

Jorvik1978 · 06/02/2026 11:38

I started on a hybrid contract, and my organisation are just in the process of closing the office I work out of, so will be going fully WFH from April 1st. I was/am well established within my field, and was biding my time for the role to come up within the organisation.

WFH full-time isn't all its cracked up to be. It can be very lonely, and I do miss the across office chats that can often be really helpful/insightful. I work in a very technical area, and those 'does anyone know how to ....' conversations are really useful. I've loved being hybrid with the choice of when to go into the office and when to work from home, and I'm going to miss having the option. Quite a few of us feel the same way so we are looking to set up regular catch-ups using a hire on-demand office space.

7238SM · 06/02/2026 11:44

What are your skills/qualifications/experience? I agree that very few are solely WFH now, but many are hybrid. What type of job roles are you looking for?

AutismMum2017 · 06/02/2026 11:54

Thanks for the replies. I probably should have mentioned that I have 20 years experience in Customer Services, Account Management and Administration.

I left my previous FT role when my DC was born, and whilst I went back to work FT when we got a preschool place, the strains of working full time whilst fighting for diagnosis/school places etc proved too much.

I have tried TA roles but because of my experience, I was generally placed with the very high need/pre verbal children that should have been in specialist schools causing burn out on my part.

I’m just looking for a bit of admin a few hours a week.

Sugarrum · 06/02/2026 12:04

I think you could struggle to find wfh admin work that’s just a few hours a week, rather than ft unless you look into freelancing type thing and just picking up admin jobs here and there (but that ends up taking more hours as you need to market yourself essentially).

If you’re wanting flexible, you could try doing something like cambly, the pay is rubbish and you will be self employed so will need to do self assessment but it’s flexible you can start and stop whenever, no set times, it’s talking to people trying to learn English so they can practice.

7238SM · 06/02/2026 12:09

Maybe look at office angels. I think they do both temp/part time/perm roles. You are unlikely to get fully WFH to start with, but you might hear of up coming roles or have some flexibility once in.
Admittedly years ago, but a friend did temp admin with for them. She was also a part time actress, so enjoyed the flexibility of only doing the admin part 3 days a week.

There really aren't the number of admin roles there used to be anymore. Admin can now be automated a lot of time, so companies have invested in IT workflows to do admin instead of staff and where admin is still part of a human-role it is often combined into other roles. From what I see, If a company does still employ admin-only staff they expect them to be office based more so than other roles for some reason (e.g., admin role is now often cojoined with manning the reception desk).

Also, a lot of WFH roles will be advertised as full time - so only wanting a few hours a week is going to reduce the potential roles massively.

BringBackCatsEyes · 06/02/2026 12:13

How do I manage?
My current and previous 2 professional roles have been fully WFH. Academia, science, international workforce, work (database and publishing) can easily be done remotely.

I also have a freelance (scientific publishing) job I do for about 7 hrs a week to boost my income and as a backup in the current uncertain scientific funding climate.

Although I was WFH well before Covid, the pandemic has made things easier - the collaborative tech/software and the acknowledgment that it can work very well.

ThirdStorm · 06/02/2026 12:16

I do work that can be done remotely but I currently work for a business that hates WFH! They tolerate it on occasion but generally it isn't allowed. It was acceptable during/post Covid but like many businesses the goal posts have been moved. I am mostly okay with that as like others have said I enjoy company, technical how to discussions which are generally impromptu and find WFH isolating. Just occasionally its nice to work remotely so I don't have the commute and I can get my head down without interruptions!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 06/02/2026 12:20

i think you need to get an actual job first and most of them are likely hybrid now so a bit of home and a bit of office

both me and husband work hybrid - 50% office and 50% home!

I don't know of too many jobs 100% at home anymore

some weeks i only work in office 1 day and home the rest as they are super casual about it

Greenwitchart · 06/02/2026 12:20

I work freelance and mostly from home but I realised I don't mind having meetings in person with clients because I now work for local businesses.

Before I used to work an hybrid role for a charity based in London and absolutely hated the long commute, my colleagues and that office environment!

So my point is hybrid work with a short commute and decent clients/bosses/colleagues can be a good thing too. It might give you more opportunities than wanting to WFH only.

dragonexecutive · 06/02/2026 12:21

Our admin team are generally required to work in the office full time because their role is to provide business support and to deal with people in person. We also don't generally allow WFH until someone has completed probation and is settled in.

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 06/02/2026 12:21

I follow a page called the work from home hub on Facebook. They advertise only wfh jobs. Check that out

sidneytweeney · 06/02/2026 12:21

Boots89 · 06/02/2026 12:22

Edited

This was the website I was going to suggest.

Lots of charities have fully remote/hybrid roles.

TwilightAb · 06/02/2026 12:24

I wfh but I have been with the same organisation for 16 years and worked my way up to this position. I'm lucky that my current position is very flexible and whilst I do need to occasionally go to offices, I mainly work from home. Before covid we were all office based. I know I am lucky to be able to, however I am conscious that I need to get exercise elsewhere as wfh you dont really get that and my kids are still in after school club so I can work until 5pm.

TSHconfusion · 06/02/2026 12:25

All office based jobs at my company offer wfh 2 days a week but it rarely says that on the job ad. You really need to apply and then ask is wfh an option or speak to a recruiter as they will know which of their clients will offer wfh

kittiecat16 · 06/02/2026 15:08

Try using indeed and searching the kind of job role you want then update location to “remote”. Then it will bring up roles with remote working

Clychaugog · 06/02/2026 15:10

Accountancy.

I've was working remotely for clients long before it was fashionable.

DottyLottieLou · 06/02/2026 15:11

Have you tried local councils or insurance companies

canuckup · 06/02/2026 15:46

I have to admit, it's the dream.

I have the most boring job known, but it's 80% WFH so it's manageable.

Fireflybaby · 06/02/2026 15:52

For admin roles look at civil servant/ nhs/ government positions, many work from home or hybrid.
