Will it ever stop raining?

I moved from Manchester to London 30 years ago and have generally been pleased with how much drier it is down here. But it feels like it’s been raining forever now and it’s forecast to continue. It’s so boring having to take your umbrella everywhere. My memory’s not the best but I can’t remember when it’s last rained for so long.

I hope the summer is drier but who knows? ☔️

A drop? I'm guessing you don't live in Somerset. It's been non stop here...38 days with no end in sight.

Also in the SW and agree it's been terrible - we've officially had more than twice the average Jan rainfall this year so it's not like we're just moaning about normal weather patterns. It is officially raining a LOT and the flooding around the Stour has been really bad.

A drop of rain won't hurt you. It's far better than all the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions some countries are having, and all the death and destruction that comes with them.

Tell that to the people in the South East of Ireland who’ve lost everything in the last couple of weeks because of the rain. It’s hardly ‘just a drop’

It was blue skies and sunny in London on Wednesday!

There's always someone worse off.

That doesn't mean we can't complain that it has been raining constantly for weeks and looks like continuing for the next two weeks.
You're just lucky you're not affected by it.

krustykittens · 06/02/2026 16:12

It's depressing. We have horses and I am tired and cold and so are they. They normally live out 24/7 but I am bringing them down from their winter grazing next week and moving them onto a corral we normally keep them on while their fields rest until spring. I hate stabling them but I think just a few hours a day out of the rain on dry bedding will do them all the world of good, even the oldies. I am trying to be grateful as we are on a private water supply and the last thing we need is water shortages during the summer! The last few years we have had bone dry springs and summers and it is frightening, looking at the weather forecast and seeing nothing but sun symbols. Our weather is becoming more and more extreme. :(

MorphingintoMargo · 06/02/2026 16:23

I’m totally sick of it!
Nothing drys in this weather. It’s too warm for the heating to kick in, so I’ve resorted to firing up the log burner to dry things out (don’t tell the people of the current’ wood burners are evil’ thread!). The dog is constantly wet and smelly. Walks are miserable.
I’ve booked a last minute foreign holiday to somewhere dry, which isn’t exactly helping with the global warming problem. Air travel and all that.

BitterlyLemon · 06/02/2026 16:26

I saw on the bbc news that Aberdeen hasn’t seen sunlight for 15 days (though tbh it feels like I haven’t seen sunlight for about 3 months at this point)

PropertyD · 06/02/2026 16:32

I went to our local town centre and it was dead. This hits not just our moods but shops and hospitality. People will just postpone their visits to the next day or next week or even when it stops raining which isnt going to be anytime soon.

The garden looks a disgrace and the dog smells….

DobbyTheHouseElk · 06/02/2026 16:38

Somerset is under water. The roads are breaking up because of the floods. Even main roads are disintegrated….

Too warm? It's about 5 degrees!

You've not seen the news lately then? Awful floods, acres under water, poor farmers and businesses. Honest to god, yes it could always be worse but it's pretty awful, the climate crisis really is a crisis and it's here in front of us.

ILikeCloudyDays · 06/02/2026 16:46

I don't mind so much because I absolutely hate frost, ice and cold.
Last Summer I loved all the dry days, but also really worried about the low levels of our local reservoirs, so wet Winters are welcome if the Summers will be hotter.
However I do feel sorry for anyone dealing with floods.
It will be drier this weekend just odd showers so we will be getting out on some long walks, we haven't missed a weekend walk this Winter so it can't have been that bad

Ooh, 5 degrees and raining. Not nice. Poor you.
It’s 13 degrees here (SE), so not cold. The heating is set to click in at 17.5, but hasn’t so far.

HeadyLamarr · 06/02/2026 16:51

I've got blueprints, I've ordered the timber. I think the result will be 300 cubits long and 50 cubits wide, so you're welcome round at mine as long as you bring livestock...

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/02/2026 16:51

It’s absolutely relentless. The mud. The fucking endless mud everywhere. The drains are overflowing, everything is soggy and grey and the seeping damp is so tiring. I’m over it.
My toddler is loving the puddles but even that is losing its charm at this point tbh.

troppibambini6 · 06/02/2026 17:31

Yep it’s crap…. It’s relentless.
On a positive note Ds football match has just been called off due to a waterlogged pitch so I won’t be up at the crack of dawn and get a well needed lie in!

Rabbitcar · 06/02/2026 17:36

It’s just the relentless nature of it. Pouring down when you leave the house and still raining when you get back home. Ugh.

Cornwall has been under a yellow weather warning for the majority of this year so far. It’s madness.
My New Year’s resolution was to walk outside for at least 20 minutes every day. I thought that that sounded achievable. And then the weather has been like this and I haven’t gone outside at all on some days.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 07/02/2026 09:42

I'm normally an all-weather sort of person, outdoors a couple of hours a day at least, in my waterproof overalls if need be, but this is really REALLY too much. I'm entirely sick of it. The garden has been washed away, it's just a swamp. The poor little puppy has to paddle through 3 inches of water when she goes out to relieve herself! The house is filthy, the car is filthy, clothes get mucked up the minute you step outside. umbrellas just get blown inside out, 'waterproofs' turn out to be not quite so waterproof as you might have hoped, footwear is getting damp and stinky. Everyone is snappy with each other. And all the heavy clouds mean the lighting levels are so low it feels like we're still in midwinter. There seems to be NO END IN SIGHT!!! I feel like screaming but I don't suppose that would help much.

Rabbitcar · 07/02/2026 16:20

The sky has been dry for just over an hour. Honestly, it makes such a difference to your mood.

There was me, enjoying the fact we are gaining about 2 minutes a day light-wise, thinking how nice it is to get out for my (NY R) daily walk to have at least 10000 steps on my Garmin app, and every day so far, I've been soaked through.

My resolve was strong through January, but now in February I'm utterly sick if it. Next weekend I had set a cycling "challenge" for myself on the Garmin App and I'm already thinking how am I going to do that in driving rain. The very thought makes me feel utterly sick and fed up, not motivated as I should this early in the NY.

just adding solidarity on this thread. And I'm not even thinking about the garden which is under water. The field adjoining our house has been emptying onto our garden like a waterfall for hours and hours. Crying....

looking outside, it looks dry at the moment but I'm not holding my breathe!

echt · 08/02/2026 07:56

I checked in the Guardian - 37 days of continual rain. Bloody hell, nearly biblical.
I'm in a part of Australia ( Melbourne) that's as dry as dead dingo's donger as Barry McKenzie used to say. A dry and sunny winter (July-Aug 25), little rain but hellish wind in spring, fuck all rain and very sunny this summer.

I'd kill for some rain. Lots, actually.

BUT

I'd never underestimate the sheer horribleness of continually overcast skies. When my DH died in 2016, the winter here was cold, rainy which is normal, but very unusually, overcast for about three months. Victorian winters are usually cold but clear skies, with some rain. Dead grey skies really fuck with your mood. And with the growing of veggies.

As shit as my crispy garden looks, the sunny skies are fab.

Wishing you all sunshine and very soon. 😎
