What might this bruise be?

Posting here for traffic. I'm hoping to get a GP appointment for something different tomorrow, so might be able to ask about it then.

I tripped on Tuesday afternoon and landed hard on my side - my left hip and hand took most of the impact. Since then, my pelvis has been very sore and I've been hobbling around, but that's easing a bit now. My hand is fine. It has been feeling like I pulled a muscle in my upper arm - tight and painful on straightening/ twisting, but nothing too bad. So I was surprised to notice this 48 hours after the accident. I actually thought it was dirt at first! It wasn't there until this afternoon, and there was no actual impact to this part of my arm. The weird straight bruise stretches from the crook of my elbow, diagonally across my arm towards my armpit. At the bottom (where the veins are), there's a small swelling about the size of a 5p.

Am hoping this is nothing to worry about imminently (am not inclined to worry, but it's so strange!).

What might this bruise be?

I had a similar bruise when I had a full rupture of my calf. It may relate to the anatomy of your pulled muscle?

ScruffMuffin · 05/02/2026 21:49

Crikey, how did you manage that?

Actually I'm going to book an appointment next week for bruises that haven't faded in months. They're on 3 toes and under the nails too. I have peripheral neuropathy so cannot feel my toes or feet. I'm constantly stubbing them, bashing them. I think I might have broken a bone or done something to the bone as the bruises are so bizarre. It's spots on the bottom of toe, stripes under nail. Been at least 3 months.

Good luck @ScruffMuffin I've no idea but it needs checking outm

Torn muscle. Do you have function and movement in your hand/ wrist/ elbow? It is appropriate to see a doctor to check.

endofthelinefinally · 06/02/2026 02:32

It isn't bad, I have seen far worse and no serious damage, just took a while to heal.

Actually, unexplained bruising can be a sign of blood clotting issues/ abnormal bleeding. So a perfectly feasible reason to see the GP.

ScruffMuffin · 06/02/2026 07:34

My arm works just fine. I was just a bit mystified, particularly about the lump.
Yep, as I mentioned, I'm seeing the GP about something unrelated.

Ignorant comment.

Yeah, I wonder if that PP would consider being on my period for 17 days as a valid reason to seek medical attention. Maybe I should run all my health concerns through MN in future. 🙄
