Peeling hard boiled eggs

ArcticBells · 05/02/2026 13:09

Hard boiled eggs that don’t peel are driving me nuts, and I’m wasting so much egg white with the shell.

I know it is said that it’s very fresh eggs that don’t peel, but even ones that I bought over a week ago don’t peel. Plus having kept chickens in the past, I know this rule not to be true.

Are there any tricks I’m missing other than plunging them into cold water when done?

How else would you boil them if not in boiling water🤣🤣

I think poster means wait till water is boiling before adding eggs!
I put them in cold water bring to boil, boil first 10 minutes, drain leave in cold water for 5 minutes. Tap, then roll back and forth.

Sorry, not sure why. Google 'egg pricker' and it will come up.

KimuraTan · 05/02/2026 17:08

We use this:

https://amzn.eu/d/0gx3nuF1

It’s an egg piercer. Tiny hole in bottom of egg and then into pot to boil. Cold water after over the eggs after and they peel off nicely.

Frannyisreading · 05/02/2026 17:10

Agree, put in boiling water, then at the end put into cold water.

CookingFatCat · 05/02/2026 17:27

I just spoon the contents out. Peeling is a bugger.

zeebra · 05/02/2026 17:29

You need to leave them for 5 to ten minutes in cold water and then peel them. I have the same problem if you dont allow them to cool down first.

ThejustbrothersCarlenaNSoul · 05/02/2026 20:40

Gently roll on work top and peel under running cold water.
I do this because I don't have asbestos fingers.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 05/02/2026 23:14

The fresher they are the more difficult they are to peel. Keep them fir a bit longer and they will peel easily

SeriousFaffing · 05/02/2026 23:20

I think I remember hearing this from a tv chef. Crack the shell a bit, then take a teaspoon to slide under the shell to remove it.

It’s sheer genius and so simple.

Yumyumicedbuns · 06/02/2026 00:33

Add a splash of oil to the boiling water when adding the eggs and the shells will be easy to peel when cooked!

OneJollySloth · 06/02/2026 00:35

Add a big heaped teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to the water in the pan near the start. Then when it's done do the cold water and shake it in a mug to break the shell. Works a treat, just slips off

JimJamJelly · 05/02/2026 13:21

Gently tap and roll them around on the worktop so all the shell is cracked like crazy paving, then it usually all peels off easily.

This works every time for me.

tamade · 06/02/2026 01:50

Poke a tiny hole in the bottom (fat end) with a metal skewer or similar implement, it makes them easier to peel and prevents them from bursting too

EleanorReally · 06/02/2026 05:12

you need to plunge in cold water to stop any chance of black on the yolk
i have just boiled two eggs, currently sitting in a bowl of cold water

muddyford · 06/02/2026 05:18

I run cold water over them and dent the shell in both ends. I peel before they are cold.

Gently tap and roll them around on the worktop so all the shell is cracked like crazy paving, then it usually all peels off easily.

Do this, then roll it between your palms, it often comes off in one.

I discovered this after losing my rag peeling eggs and it reminded me of a gadget advertised about 20 years ago (maybe more!) Here's the egg, but where's the shell?!

Here's the something, but where's the peel?!

I'm hoping someone knows what I'm chuntering about 😂

Tintackedsea · 06/02/2026 05:25

Crack it all over then put in cold water so the water gets between the egg and the membrane.

Kleptronic · 06/02/2026 05:56

Another vote for the teaspoon method, it has changed my life 🙂

Changingplace · 06/02/2026 06:00

Lozza70 · 05/02/2026 13:23

Crack shell all over by rolling gently on the worktop and put into a basin of cold water. Then peel the eggs and the water. The water gets under the membrane of the egg making it easier to peel.

This, I never have an issue peeling eggs and this is how I do it, takes seconds.

I put them in cold water first though, straight into cold water, then crack the shell all over against the side of the bowl/pan and the shell will slide right off once you get under the membrane.

teambrief · 06/02/2026 06:15

Cold water then peel but oddly, I have trouble peeling white eggs. Brown ones are fine.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 06/02/2026 06:20

I run the cold water on them before letting them sit in cold water.

Then I bash them on the chopping board and they peel easily. I can't say as I've ever had this problem with hard boiled eggs though. Soft boiled, sure.
