Is it just me or are Netflix series too long?

I’m new to Netflix and just about to watch Mr Mercedes and does the story really require ten episodes? It feels like almost every show on there has an excessive number of episodes. I can understand it when there’s a different plot for each episode but less so when it’s focusing on just one plot unless it’s something like Bleak House.

They're nearly always too long. If a Netflix drama is 10 one-hour episodes, you can be sure that it could have been done much more effectively in half the time. The current drama 'The Beast in Me' is a typical example.

Jc2001 · 04/02/2026 20:29

I loved it. All 3 seasons.

HollyGolightly4 · 04/02/2026 20:30

Mr Mercedes isn't a netflix drama.

It is too long though 🤣 and was too gruesome for me in the end, even though I've read the books.

You can blame Stephen King for Mr Mercedes 🤣
But I wouldn’t complain about I show I enjoy being too long - only the boring ones!

EleanorReally · 04/02/2026 20:31

plenty of series just go on and on.
the make money

I mean series that are available on Netflix, not just those made by them. They seem to favour long series.

If you look for those called "limited series" they're shorter.

I think it's American to be honest. It puts me off some programmes.

'The Beast in Me' is a 'limited series' but it's still far too long at 10 episodes. It could have been so much better as a 5 or 6 parter.

TheMoanerLisa · 04/02/2026 20:45

My heart sinks when I drop on something that looks OK and then there are 3 seasons each with 10 episodes! Most things I do watch could be done in a third of the time.

Oooh I didn't realise!!

I started enjoying Everwood but I can’t be watching 11 episodes .

pinkdelight · 04/02/2026 20:56

I find this with thei documentaries. Everything's a 3 or 4 (or more) parter when it could easily be a single hour or one-off feature at most. Instead it's strung out and padded and I can't be arsed with it.

Me too, I watched the long drawn out first season and then S2 episode 1 to make sure Colin was alive or dead. Boring so I won't watch the other seasons. Although Delia is a fab wee character.

Ididalright · 04/02/2026 21:24

I don’t know about the one you’ve mentioned but Mindhunter wasn’t long enough! I really hope they bring that back.

Strikeback · 04/02/2026 21:28

Try Seven Dials. A nice snappy three episodes.

They cancelled it 😭 brilliant show.

WeepingAngelInTheTardis · 05/02/2026 06:31

No, some seasons are really short! Mother of penguins for example was only 6 episodes and it was so good!

Notmyreality · 05/02/2026 06:48

Bizarre post. “Netflix” series are
no different to any other series. If anything they are shorter than traditional tv seasons that are usually 24 episodes, whereas streaming series tend to have only 6-10 episodes.
This post just highlights your own poor attention span- which is why streaming series are shorter. Research shows people don’t have the attention span these days for longer seasons. I guess you’ve just proven the point.

What UK produced shows are traditionally 24 episodes?!

You're snippy 🤣

Agree with you, OP.

First couple of seasons of Better Call Saul were the best I'd seen on TV for years. But then there was another series and another...

I know, there should be more series or a movie as it seemed to end very abruptly.

Loved Jonathan Groff in it as well.

Agree.

Their documentaries are so long winded that by the end it's a relief that it is over. It's the same with Sky documentaries as well.

This is one area where the BBC is so much better. They get the message across without dragging it out!

Im talking American produced shows. You know, the good ones. Haven’t watched UK TV in years - it’s utterly rubbish. Same recycled concepts and plot lines.
