I went for a school admin job. When do they let you know if you’re successful or not?

It’s been a day and not heard anything yet.

They could still be trying to decide - did you ask at the interview how long it would likely be before you heard anything?

strongmamaxo · 03/02/2026 17:04

@IamSmarticusshe said yesterday we will decide this evening and hopefully let people know tomorrow (which is today)

They may have made an offer and are waiting to hear of the candidate accepts. I've had that happen before, where I was the second choice and the first choice turned them down.

In my experience it normally takes longer than they say to let you know, they normally estimate based on making the decision but quite often there's another step of getting sign off to make the offer. (Or something urgent crops up which needs to take priority)

It can also depend on whether you're not top pick but did 'make the grade' i.e. if you're a definite no, they can tell you immediately, but if they want to reserve the option to offer to you if the top pick declines the offer, they will wait to see if the top pick accepts.

Unfortunately, there are many employers out there who don't bother to let you know you were unsuccessful, even after interview.

If the job has a start date, and you haven't heard by then, you can assume you didn't get it.

topcat2014 · 03/02/2026 18:10

Schools usually try and offer on the day, but it isn't over until it's over

canuckup · 03/02/2026 18:25

It's too soon

strongmamaxo · 03/02/2026 20:38

@canuckupis it? It’s just because I’m set on what she said. Maybe it was a nice way to end an interview

@HeadyLamarryeah I’ve still heard nothing and it’s been 2 days but also says on their interview process they let others know if unsuccessful and I’ve not had anything either side xxx

It would be very rare for a school to not let you know.

strongmamaxo · 04/02/2026 21:03

@Vivienne1000it says on their website they let you know regardless and even tell you why if you’re unsuccessful. Start date isn’t till March but I’m impatient and getting worried. X

Our school would let you know within 2 days. Hang on in there.

strongmamaxo · 04/02/2026 21:06

@Vivienne1000I was just curious what they do afterwards with it being a school? And if there are an other steps they do behind it all? As there was only 4 interviews Monday the head teacher told me and that’s the only day they was doing x

My guess is your second choice and waiting for a firm answer from their first choice. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you

They make a decision pretty quickly. You will hear tomorrow.

Snowdrop219 · 04/02/2026 21:15

Schools generally make a decision on the day and let all candidates know. I think it’s likely that you weren’t successful this time and they are waiting for the successful candidates references. I hope it’s not the case but they don’t usually take this long to decide. You should be given feedback though and it’s not frowned upon to ask for it.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 04/02/2026 21:20

In my experience schools usually let you the same day.
