Signs you are happily middle aged!

I am slowwly coming to the realisation that I am never happier when I’m sat under my heated blanket, in a clean house with all the washing done, or drying on the heated airer (dehumidifier happiness is another add on to this tale!).

I reached a new level of personal nirvana yesterday when I made an apple crumble from scratch after an unnecessary trip to Sainsbury’s where I pootled about buying stuff, after rearranging the linen cupboard.

Younger me would have been out until 3am and have been nursing a hangover whilst eating crisps on a knackered sofa, with weeks of washing not done.

Anyone else had a personality transplant in their late 30’s/early 40’s?

Do you seriously use your annual leave on tidying the house?

I’ve officially stepped into a parallel universe. 🙃

Yep! I have three kids - 12, 5 and nearly 2. I need them to not be around to get the house actually tidy. Outside of work hours, they’re all at home or I’m too exhausted.

We like being able to afford the best seats at the theatre.

Buttheywereonlysatellites51 · 04/02/2026 10:05

I have suddenly become interested in bird watching in my middle age. Found a Youtube channel this morning called 'Get Birding' and that made my day 😄

RipplePlease · 04/02/2026 15:20

I hear you, my people!
I do go out but I much, much, much prefer staying in.
Heated throw.
Cup of tea.
DH next to me.
A good drama series.
In bed by 10:30.
I fully subscribe to the wonder that is JOMO. Joy of Missing Out 😆

My twenty something self would be mortified.

I don’t understand - does being a certain age involve a sudden keen interest in objectively boring and practical activity?

I am middle aged and happy about it, it brings increased confidence and don’t-give-a-fuck-ness.

My hobbies remain fairly static - drinking wine and reading MN (since my twenties) shopping for clothes (admittedly more annoying given my increased girth) and listening to pop.

Pretty much this find it quite misogynistic to suggest that women become boring and only want to lie on the couch with glass of wine and a blanket over 40.

When I was in my twenties, I was severely nervous and anxious and too afraid to do anything.I was afraid of the world

No, i'm over 40.I've never been so outgoing and I am out every night this week. And pursuing hobbies, I never dreamed possible in my twenties.

But, you know, enjoy being an old fart at 40 plus if it works for you

purplecorkheart · 04/02/2026 15:39

I am happy I have stopped being a people pleaser and that I have stopped bending over backwards to keep other people happy.

I’m so middle aged I can’t even drink wine anymore!

Nor me. I'd much rather have a nice cup of tea and a sit down.

And cardigans. Machine-washable bog-standard cardigans, not those poncy fashion jobs that need handling by someone with a degree in how not to bugger up your knitwear from the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Is late 30s even middle aged?

pilates · 04/02/2026 16:17

I get you op. I get so much enjoyment when I can hang my washing out, cook from scratch and dog walking.

It’s not misogynistic to want to be at home and comfortable. It would be if people said all women absolutely should/will do this but I don’t think anyone here has said that.

I’m 31 and DH is 34. We love being at home, comfortable and free to just be! We’re always rushing about after kids, work or domestic duties so it feels great to just sit.

We still go out to the cinema, theatre, dinner, etc. and enjoy it but there is something extra nice about just being at home. If you prefer to be out every day, that’s great! The best bit is that we can all do what suits us without insulting anyone else. 🙂

Do you have any reading comprehension?

It's not misogynistic to like doing it, but the tone of the OPs thread suggests that all women go through this and that this is what middle aged women do.

Is this is what you enjoy at?Any age and knock yourself out?No issue with that.

The op suggested we all have personality transplants, and so many people have agreed with her.

It is very much NOT misogynistic to suggest that women can do whatever they want, however they want to do it.

Nobody is telling women they have to do these things. We are all entirely free to live our lives however we wish, and some of us now take delight in doing what we might ourselves have found boring when we were younger. So what?

Sticking with the insulting. Lovely.

I read it as a light hearted thread. My tastes have absolutely changed from when I was younger. I was constantly organising places to be and people to meet because I had all the time in the world and only myself to worry about. I don’t now - I am an adult with bills and kids. If yours haven’t, good for you.

Another one. It IS misogynistic to suggest as in the OP that middle aged women have a personality transplant.

Lots of people who didnt learn reading comprehension at school today

HarryVanderspeigle · 04/02/2026 16:28

I get reeeeaaaallllyyy excited looking at the tomato seeds I am going to grow. And regularly look online for more varieties even though I already have too many.

justtheotheronemrswembley · 04/02/2026 16:31

Oh the irony in using the term 'misogynistic'. For years there's been a saying bandied about of the time when men reach the 'pipe and slippers' time of their lives.

What we are doing now is saying 'Sod convention, we no longer have to fit in with an image of who we're supposed to be, we'll do what we damn well please'.

Strewth. Nobody has said that ALL women have a 'personality transplant' as you call it, when they reach a certain age. Lots of people on this thread clearly have no idea what misogyny really is.

All that happens is that some of us suddenly come to the conclusion that we no longer give a shit about what other people think of our life choices.

I'm about as far from being misogynistic as it is possible to get, and thankfully, I no longer give a shit what other people think of me anyway.😎

Yes the electric blanket! Literally immobilises me.

Ok! Explain it to us daft women then.

I am reading an OP that refers almost entirely to herself and what she likes to do. That’s made clear by the use of “I”. She then goes on to ask if anyone else has experienced a change in personality. Literally no mention of all women getting a personality transplant. Just one person starting a lighthearted thread.

The fact that most people replying have given examples of their own experience of this tells me you like to look for ways to be higher and mightier than other poor women who can’t see the misogyny. Perhaps you’re just easily offended. Maybe you’re the “old fart” with a sense of humour bypass. We shall never know!

Solaire18381 · 04/02/2026 20:12

I'm in my 40's, definitely middle aged. Wearing flat shoes (in my twenties I swore I'd never stop wearing heels) and also practical clothing. As well as the more comfortable bras, no more underwired, padded and push up!

livelovelough24 · 04/02/2026 20:14

I always wonder why some people prefer hijacking other people’s threads instead of starting their own.

TwoTuesday · 04/02/2026 20:23

I don't feel middle aged but I am forever trying to drag family out for walks, and wondering when I'm going to win on Premium Bonds, so I'm definitely there. Still don't like housework or cooking and likely never will!

Specialagentblond · 04/02/2026 20:56

I think plenty of men go through this too but I and the OP can only speak for ourselves, as women.

NoEffingWay · 04/02/2026 21:02

To clear things up, I was not being patriarchal. I do not feel that threads which are clearly lighthearted need to have this flagged. To confirm, I am degree educated and also in a long term relationship with my heated blanket 😂
