Diagnosed with adhd

Hello I keep getting told I have adhd ! By work colleagues or friends. I've struggled with poor mental health for years so I paid for an assessment. I got 8/9 on the inattentive scoring and 9/9 on the impulsive. I'm 39 and I have adhd!

Is the assessment an official diagnosis? If so, congratulations. You have joined a club that has millions of members

TinaTwinkleToes · 02/02/2026 17:36

Official diagnosed. I went private.

You can have ADHD without an official diagnosis.

OP, congrats on finding this out about yourself- it changed my life when I discovered it for me. What treatment options have they given you?

CreepingCrone · 02/02/2026 17:38

53 and I've just been diagnosed too. Shame I can't afford to get the prescription privately...

TinaTwinkleToes · 02/02/2026 17:42

Medication for now but I don't think ill take it. It just means a lot makes sense.

Never said anybody couldn’t, I was just asking if an assessment is a diagnosis.

Apologies, I read your post differently.

Don’t forget to mention it at every opportunity 😉

Hello I keep getting told I have adhd ! By work colleagues or friends.

Surely your response is clear: “I do”

DD1 aged 40+ has recently been diagnosed as ADHD that she also said made things make sense. She says the meds have helped her in her daily Iife.

Well I probably won't tell them lol. I need to process it myself first

Because I went private medication is expensive. My Gp does shared care so maybe I can get it from them if I feel it's needed .

Hi @TinaTwinkleToes I’m 59 and was diagnosed in December. I rarely talk about it too, my friends are very dismissive about it ( which I found out when DD 17 was diagnosed with AuDHD 3 years ago ). I really want to try meds though.

I've found that GPs do prescribe meds that are advised privately. Guess it depends on your GP.

I was diagnosed by nhs in my 50s. No one was surprised
im afraid I probably mention it too much.
nit sure why. I think I want people to know Im not rude, stupid, uncaring… whatever negative thing I’ve grown up with.
I find the medication life changing
i don’t feel bitter about being diagnosed so late, no one was diagnosed when I was a kid.
I do wish I’d have known when I first had my kids. But my eldest were born in the 90s so there wasn’t much help then either
it feels amazing to be able to ask for help when I go to training , seminars etc. they used to be agony.
anyway, nice to meet you 😊

I feel like they've made a mistake though. How can I be nearly 40 and not have known?
