Does anyone else not have ‘a favourite’?

I was just thinking the other day that when someone asks ‘What’s your favourite book?’ Or ‘What’s your favourite song?’ that I genuinely don’t have an answer.

There are quite a few books I’ve really enjoyed but I would be hard-pressed to pick a favourite as they’ve all meant different things at different times. Ditto songs/music, I like lots of different songs for different reasons. Food the same. I genuinely can’t think of anything I have a ‘favourite’ for!

Am I weird?

I don't have 1 favourite of anything. I have favourite books of different genres, age groups etc. Same for music.

I recently had to set up security questions for online banking. It asked me a series of questions, including quite a few favourites. There's no way I will remember my answers as I don't have a lot of those "favourites".

It depends what day it is for me!

I think those questions are presuming that favourite items will remain so for life, but my experience has been that favourites change over the course of time.

I totally agree with you, I hate those questions!

I’m glad it’s not just me!

My favourite colour is red and my favourite number is 6. I don't know why. I don't have any other favourites.

stickydough · 31/01/2026 20:53

Yes me. Questions about my favourite this or that stress me out!!

coffeeagogo · 31/01/2026 20:54

Me! I always feel a bit strange about not having a favourite book/song/artist etc. I also don’t think about ‘dream’ houses/holidays/kitchen/wedding etc. I suspect I may have a lack of imagination…

I thought this was going to be about children.

i have a favourite drink (outing) and that’s about it. My favourite book / movie was a clockwork orange growing up and then I grew up and can’t decide on anything

JustauseraskinganotheruserWTF · 31/01/2026 20:57

I have fads.
I could be obsessed with lets say yellow today but in a week's time I'll never touch yellow again and it'll be white.
Simplistic explanation of it but that's how my mind works I don't have a favourite for many years.

thistimelastweek · 31/01/2026 21:00

OP, you are not weird in my book. I have preferences and that's it.
Why does anyone beyond childhood need a favourite? I have adult relatives who have favourite animals. (Not dogs or cats.) Really?

TheDenimPoet · 31/01/2026 21:03

Yeah, I have "current favourites" of everything, but no enduring favourite of anything. As you say, everything brings back memories of the past, so I have a favourite song from childhood, high school, uni, my 20s.. etc. There's nothing wrong with it.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 31/01/2026 21:54

I don't understand favourite numbers, they are just numbers. Colours is consistent with me (blue) but songs books, movies, TV can change by the month.

DaughterOfPearl · 01/02/2026 08:48

I would agree with @JustauseraskinganotheruserWTF as I am definitely more a 'fads' person.
Take mustard yellow for example, it seemed to be everywhere a couple of years ago in the home decor sphere and I hated everything about it!
I thought it was simply the most vile colour and couldn't understand why anyone would want it in their home......I've just painted my kitchen mustard yellow and I love it 🤣
I couldn't pick a favourite book but if anyone asks I always use Jane Eyre because I loved it as a child so it's easy to remember.

Bjorkdidit · 01/02/2026 10:48

I think it's more odd to have a single unchanging favourite anything, surely it depends on the circumstances and stage of life?

Which makes those bank security questions about favourite this, that and the other impossible to answer and remember without writing things down.
