And I think perhaps I should try harder with my diet
I did try for a couple of weeks after Xmas
made no weight loss

inhave a good stone to lose maybe bit more

then had a couple of very stressful weeks and fell off the wagon

so now I’m ready to restart

I’ve lost weigh before with slimming world and gym
but slimming world polluted my mind with all sorts of disordered thinking around food

and I want to ideally
think about eatting for nutrition rather than cardboard and whatever just because it’s low calories or syns or whatever

a typical day I might have no breakfast
not hungry

i dont tend to eat till lunchtime
then its maybe sarnie, Crisps drink and maybe say a club biscuit or choc mouse

dinners tend to be family type meals
sausage and mash n beans
burgers n chips pea
roasts
omlettes
beef stew
shepards pie

I don’t tend to snack between meals
I tend to drink one or two cans of sugary drink(which I know is an easy fix)
don’t drink enough water or squash

don’t drink alcohol tea or coffee
no drugs no medication
no smoking
active

5ft 4 11.8 stone

I think a good guide is half your plate should be veg. One quarter carbs like brown rice, sweet potatoes . Whole grain pasta . The other quarter protein like chicken, beef, fish . No fatty sauces.
No desserts, pastry, cheese apart from cottage cheese. No crisps, , chips or fried food at all. No biscuits, sweets .
If you must snack, raw veg, a small amount of hummus , fruit, Greek yogurt in small amounts. A small handful of nuts.
Lots and lots of water, no alcohol. No fizzy drinks, no sugar in anything .
Keep bread to two slices a day and no more.
Breakfast should be a small bowl of porridge or Greek yogurt and chopped fruit with a few nuts. Scrambled or poached eggs with one or two pieces of toast .
No processed food . Make home made soup for lunch or have a salad.

I have an NHS Dietician/Nutritionist. I know they're like gold dust. I've seen her every three months for almost ten years, usually appointmentsare around an hour. I don't think she personally offers me any information that isn't freely available everywhere.
I see her because I'm permanently tube fed and have a life limiting condition. It's that she's monitoring.

So is olive oil seed oil
what is the best oil to use ?

Are seed oils bad

OP posts:
AmazingGraced · 30/01/2026 20:51

Seed oil is made from seeds . So sunflower, rape seed, sesame seed . They aren’t great because they encourage inflammation in the body. Olive oil is fantastic. Go for cold pressed virgin oil, it is preferable to use it unheated as a dressing really but if you heat it keep the temperature low. It should never smoke or be very hot .

I would also say have three meals a day, last meal no later than 6 pm. Try not to eat after your evening meal at all. Eat slowly. Drink loads of water . Avoid eating between meals if you possibly can. Take exercise every day. Brisk walking, swimming, running, cycling. Try not to sit for long periods , keep active in the house as much as possible. Do yoga at least once a week and take a good quality multi vitamin and mineral.

So what’s vegetable oil then ?

It’s a generic term for oils derived from nuts and seeds .

StylishAndBeautiful · 30/01/2026 21:00

Good oils have omega-3 fatty acids and are mono-unsaturated.

So is nut oil better than seed oil ? So peanut oil better than sunflower or rapeseed

Is your BMI even high enough to obtain weight loss injections?

StylishAndBeautiful · 30/01/2026 21:19

As you can imagine, it ain't cheap. H&B is expensive but often has offers, and the staff are well trained.

Using a light touch with oil will make it go further. For frying (which I only do when I have to like the base for a stew or curry), I use groundnut (peanut) oil because it has a good flavour or sunflower oil.

The EVOO is for when I need to use the oil raw.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 30/01/2026 21:31

Just for reference, today I have had:

Breakfast: fast (until 12, every day).
Lunch: Large Salad with lettuce, toms, cucumber, radishes, mange tout, red pepper, mixed beans, seeds, smoked peppered mackerel fillet and 2 boiled eggs. Olive oil vinaigrette.
Snack: vegan protein shake with berries, small handful of almonds, carrot.
Dinner: Chicken tray bake with butternut squash, parsnip, peppers, onion, toms, kale and harissa marinade. Roughly a fist sized amount of bulgar wheat.

I run and lift weights several times a week.
It helps to prioritise veg and choose a healthy source of protein to go with it, then add in some healthy fats. This should keep you full and your blood sugar stable. Keep starchy carbs (pasta, rice etc) relatively low. I adjust mine according to the amount and type of exercise I have done that day. This has generally served me well and I love my food!

Ohthatsabitshit · 30/01/2026 21:39

You say you eat 1500 kcalories a day but how many do you need a day to maintain your weight? It’s the deficit that matters. I considered mounjaro etc but decided it was worth trying a really calorie controlled diet first. I’ve lost nearly 3 stone and am really grateful I tried first.

StylishAndBeautiful · 30/01/2026 21:45

That sounds similar to how I eat but I eat one large meal late morning.

Priority is green veg + more colourful veg+ carb veg (e.g potato/sweet potato). Small amount of protein e.g. 1 or 2 eggs or fist size of lentils/beans. Smallish amount of fat (cheese usually) . Will usually eat that with wraps - if not then the carby veg and pulses portion will be higher.

Bringemout · 30/01/2026 21:45

I think you should focus on increasing protein and dropping the sugary simple carbs. For example chicken with rice for lunch instead (you can batch cook and heat up later). I like veg but it just doesn’t fill me up and keep me full for long. Try to make sure at every meal you are getting 30g protein.

LowCarbingIn2024 · 30/01/2026 21:59

A relation of mine is a dietician for the NHS

I think she's quite well respected.

When I started doing @BIWI's low carb boot camp (got it's own board on here) I ran it all past my relative first.
She agreed with almost everything about it, except 1 tiny detail.

You could do a lot worse by checking out those threads and maybe joining a bootcamp, they tend to be very supportive and BIWI totally knows what she's talking about

(BTW, the tiny detail was around the amount of water you have to drink each day, which is on a sliding scale depending on your height and weight. I'm tall and fat [fatter back then] and was supposed to drink a crazy amount of water each day. Dietician relation said i really didn't need to drink 4l, or whatever it was. I assume BIWI is 2 foot high and weighs as much as a thimble to not be awarenessof the higher end of that scale!)

DuchessofStaffordshire · 30/01/2026 21:59

Also, it's really helpful to keep healthy things on hand that take no preparation that you can grab for a snack. I always have boiled eggs, cold chicken, nuts, carrots, celery, peppers etc on hand. Sliced apple with peanut butter is a nice sweet treat and satisfying. I also mix up a vegan protein shake to sip on in the afternoon to keep me satisfied. It's a little bit UPFy but I don't strive for perfection and I'm happy as long as my diet is 95% clean.

StylishAndBeautiful · 30/01/2026 22:02

I find the opposite. Some veg takes ages to digest (spring greens and carrots in my case), but I need some protein and fat with it.

The amount of protein and fat will probably be a lot smaller than you think.
I think the daily guideline is roughly .75g of protein for every Kg of body weight.
(about 55g if you weigh 10 st)

The fat is a tiny amount but if you use something with a lot of flavour it really improves the food.

On the subject of fat, if I have milk, I have the full fat one. It is only 4% fat.
(Butter is 80% fat, for comparison).
