Wine drinkers - what's your opinion on Malbec?

In the space of a few years Malbec appears to have become the dominant red wine on sale in supermarkets (especially Waitrose, I've noticed). I really liked it when it first appeared about 20-25 years ago - I found it flavourful but a little fresher and easier drinking than some Cabernet Sauvignons or Chiantis. But the last bottle I bought for myself - probably at least a decade ago - was different and disappointing. TBH it reminded me of cough medicine - rather sweeter and more scented than it used to be. I was given a bottle for my birthday a few weeks ago and I accepted graciously but it tasted much the same as I remember. I did finish it though but I also felt vindicated in not having bought Malbec for so long! However, I could well be in the minority in not being a fan, judging by the umpteen brands available. Perhaps there is more than one style.

I do like Primitivo/Zinfandel and Carmenere and many dry white wines.

The answer for this lies in the origin. I love Malbec and for many years used to drink French Malbec because it was quite earthy and savoury. Then I moved the other side of the equator and Argentine Malbecs came on to my radar - wow! So rich! So jammy! But I think my favourites are the Chilean ones - it really does make a difference according to the soil the grapes are grown in, the altitude, the amount of sunlight they get, etc. Do you have a wine merchant place near you where you can trial wines? We have this: https://ndjohn.co.uk (and my friend works there - handy!) so I can try out all different types. That said, my all time favourite remains Pinot Noir - the best ones are inky and silky with leather and vanilla - nom, nom, nom!*

*I know that's for food, but what's the wine version? Glug, glug, glug?!
