Anyone else tracking the Beluga5's final flight?

It was one of the first Belugas and today it's retiring. It's home will be Chester/Hawarden airport and it's flying there from France now. It will do a fly by around the local area before landing for good.

I'm tracking it on flight radar. It should be landing in about an hour. It will fly over my house.

Oh wow! I didn’t know it was retiring. I would love to see this in real life. I’m too far east!

QueenOfDuisburg · 29/01/2026 10:07

Yes I'm tracking it! They sometimes fly over my house too but looks like it won't today 😞Me and my friend used to track them while we were at work and always said we'd rush off over to Hawarden Airport in time to see one land but we never got round to it.

I live at the end of the runway pretty much. I get all the cool stuff.

Red arrows is my favourite.

They are retiring the older ones in favour of the new bigger XL ones. When they roar up for take off my house rumbles.

This one is special because it is one of the original ones.

Oh it will be just missing my house by the looks of it, not that we have much visibility today anyway.

Yep, and I'd have to check but I think this one today is the very last standard Beluga to go...it's all XLs from now on.

winnieanddaisy · 29/01/2026 10:39

I’ve just gone on the app to track it . We only live about 10 miles from the airport.

I think that is correct.

It's nearly here! I'll try and get a photo.

I love aeroplanes that have been given character like this one Grin Bit like the older styles of cars were before they all became homogenous. Thanks for posting the pics!

Not quite, there are high trees in the garden that obscure the view so this is from the field out the front.

The Beluga is that shape because it's is a transporter plane and it's to do with the way it opens up for loading.

I've attached an image of what the Beluga looks like when loading. It's quite fascinating. I see them everyday so it's something I sometimes take for granted.

It’s gone from looking cute to looking badass 😆

blobby10 · 29/01/2026 15:26

@EarlofShrewsbury I do prefer watching transporter planes over passenger jets - my DS worked on the C17's for a few years and they were very impressive to watch.
