Temperature blankets - crochet tips

Hi, I want to make one but not too huge. How many chains would you recommend for a lap/sofa type blanket? Any tips?

I don’t know about temperature blankets specifically but I usually either go with what the pattern says or if I want a different size, look at whatever it says I need a multiple of, put a stitch holder in every 10th or 20th chain to help me keep count & then chain until I’m happy with the width.
